Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Arcachon

by Lilasel

Arcachon has been already in XIXth century a renowned seaside and climatic station, centre of attraction of the European upper class. Nowadays numerous animation and sports activities enrapture the summer visitors as well as his marina and its ten kilometres of beaches of fine sand, next to Basin which carries its name.

Not far from Arcachon there is the Dune of Pyla - the highest of Europe... Arcachon is also famous by excellent oysters.

in Bergerac (75 km east of Bordeaux): the restaurant of Chateau Monbazillac. located at Chateau Monbazillac (5 km south of Bergerac)
very special: Chateau Monbazillac produces a world famous desert wine, very similar to a Sauternes and - may be - better than many of these. Today most wineries in Bergerac make their own Monbazillac but still one of the best comes from the Chateau itself ---- now the best: if you visit the 16th century castle they let you taste the Monbazillac as well! In combination with the restaurant you can sit on the terrace, enjoying the panorama when you look down to the Dordogne river, drink your Monbazillac ... local specialities, menues can be ordered including the right wines. Menue of 5 dishes including 4 wines start at FF 200.-

Cathedral St.-Andre: Admire the Choir & Ambulatory

by hquittner

The choir area is much taller that the nave and the ambulatory and transepts widen the church considerably. They are a fine example of Rayonnant Gothic style. The carved altar is encircled by fine carved 17C stalls and a Bishop's chair. The South transept Rose and its glass enhances the ensemble.

The Centre Jean-Moulin May Be Interesting

by hquittner

This building is essentially a museum devoted to the French Resistance and the Deportation in the last war. (We did not go in). In the park between it and the Cathedral is a statue of Victory. A peaceful spot.

A Week in Bordeaux 1995

by ExTaquero

"Chateau Prieure-Lichine"

...<< It was purchased in 1951 by the great Bordeaux visionary Alexis Lichine - he improved the quality of the wines through investing heavily in new vineyards and by modernising the vinification techniques. He died in 1989 and the estate is now run by his son Sacha, with guru oenologist Michel Rolland acting as consultant. >>

Sacha Lichine was our gracious host in 1995 during the week of the harvest. We will never forget our magnificent dinner in the cellar of his chateau (1952 Margaux was just one of the wines!) and our "harvest lunch" with the grape harvesters the following day.

"What All the Fuss Is About"

We still have one bottle left from the 1995 vintage ... from these grapes!
