Bordeaux for 5 days

by Milly17

Hi. I am flying to Bordeaux for 5 days next thursday with a friend and want some ideas on what to do in Bordeaux and areas to visit nearby (within 3 hrs). We are deliberating over hiring a car, so wanted to get some ideas of places we can get to by train/bus. we're looking for culture, history and a relaxing/chilled time. Beach or mountains & villages all good. Also any recommendations on accommodation. I'm not so into modern hotels but still like good value cleanliness! thanks very much!!

Plenty of vineyards round there. You can reach St Emilion by train - better than driving if you're tasting wine. Further is Castillon-la-Bataille, which is where France finally defeated the English in the Hundred Years War. They have a re-enactment with banquet some weekends in summer. The cast seems to be the entire population - the barmaid is the town's mayor etc.

Visit Arcachon, you'll love it.

The Médoc is the region between Bordeaux and the Gironde, and, as mentioned, famous for its vineyards. Every second vineyard includes a castle, incredible. Other famous names are Chateau Laffite, Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, etc. They offer bicycle tours from vineyard to vineyard, chateau to chateau, really nice (for ex, from Pauillac). At the very northern point you have la Pointe du Grave, and from Soulac-sur-Mer you can go on boat tours through the swamps and the Gironde.

Apart from Archachon which is a nearly circular bay/lagoon you have some lakes of the Landes, like Etang d'Hourtin-Carcans and Lacanau. The area is flat, so you could also rent a bicycle there, tours in large pine forests. Great white sandy beaches. At Archachon you find Europe's highest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla. Great watersport activities, like kayaking on rivers (one even is part of the pilgrim's way to Santiago de Compostela), rowing in the lagoon, etc.

Driving east of Bordeaux you come through great little villages. Drive an hour to the north on the motorway, you reach Cognac where the cognac comes from.

Bordeaux itself is a stunning city, and you should at least have a full day to enjoy it.

Hi there

reading the posts and am impressed with your answer to previous question....My wife and I will travel to bordeaux early july- 2 days in the city...then wide open for the next 8 days....as well as the north, south east and west offerings...any possibilities of being specific regarding areas to base ourselves in for a few days.......looking for a clean safe hotel...normal facilities...restaurants and scenery etc....can find the hotels no problem...but would love the recommendations re town or villages.

My comment re somebody flying into cork in Ireland with a similar question would be ...fly to cork...go to blarney- but avoid midleton...travel to Kinsale but ignore macroom...etc....can you offer a similar suggestion around Bordeaux...I like to drive so no worries there and we've never been in this region before so no worries on previous hassles etc

many thanks

selym

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

The 'Esplanade des Quinconces'...

by annelies77

The 'Esplanade des Quinconces' is a huge promenade that takes up more than 12 hectares in the heart of Bordeaux by the river 'la Garonne'.

Replacing the 15th century Château de Trompette, this vast space of tree-lined esplanade, with statues and fountains, was created in 1827-59.

Arcachon Beach

by JulesH

About 40 minutes by train from Gare St Jean is Arcachon...a small beach town, the main part of which has a very British air about it. The architecture along the seafront is surprisingly unFrench and the plethora of childrens activities like trampolines, swingboats and carousels along with the multiple old fashioned piers scream "Margate in the sun"!

If you walk, catch the bus or if you are lucky enough to have a car to drive up the hill out of the main town, a far more beautiful part of Arcachon opens up...flat and white sand, the Atlantic coast curving round almost endlessly.

Place de la Bourse and the 'Miroir des Quais'

by aaaarrgh

'Place de la Bourse' is one of the great treasures of Bordeaux, a beautiful classical square laid out beside the River Garonne during the late 18th century. At the centre is the Fountain of the Three Graces. After dark the square is illuminated and, apparently, looks good from the opposite river bank.

A really clever touch is the 'Miroir des Quais' designed by Jean-Max Llorca in 2005. It is across the main road, opposite the 'Place de la Bourse'. The 'miroir' is a large 3400m2 flat area of paving that is continually covered with an inch of water. You can get a perfect reflection of Bordeaux's buildings along the Garonne. A great photo opportunity!

The 'miroir' has another intriguing trick - every so often jets of fine mist squirt from the pavement, covering the 'miroir' with a metre of fog. Of course kids (and adults) love it!! And it is great for everyone on a hot day!

Stock Building

by bugulma

The stock building was built in 80-s of XIX century. It is situated on Place de la Bourse. There were restoration works of the square but the ensemble of buildings look great. Besides, in night when Lionel made for me a city tour, I enjoyed wonderful view of stock lights from the left bank of the river. They reconstructed the square ong time and I was lucky to see renovate one in june 2006.
