The 'Esplanade des Quinconces'...
by annelies77
The 'Esplanade des Quinconces' is a huge promenade that takes up more than 12 hectares in the heart of Bordeaux by the river 'la Garonne'.
Replacing the 15th century Château de Trompette, this vast space of tree-lined esplanade, with statues and fountains, was created in 1827-59.
Arcachon Beach
by JulesH
About 40 minutes by train from Gare St Jean is Arcachon...a small beach town, the main part of which has a very British air about it. The architecture along the seafront is surprisingly unFrench and the plethora of childrens activities like trampolines, swingboats and carousels along with the multiple old fashioned piers scream "Margate in the sun"!
If you walk, catch the bus or if you are lucky enough to have a car to drive up the hill out of the main town, a far more beautiful part of Arcachon opens up...flat and white sand, the Atlantic coast curving round almost endlessly.
Place de la Bourse and the 'Miroir des Quais'
by aaaarrgh
'Place de la Bourse' is one of the great treasures of Bordeaux, a beautiful classical square laid out beside the River Garonne during the late 18th century. At the centre is the Fountain of the Three Graces. After dark the square is illuminated and, apparently, looks good from the opposite river bank.
A really clever touch is the 'Miroir des Quais' designed by Jean-Max Llorca in 2005. It is across the main road, opposite the 'Place de la Bourse'. The 'miroir' is a large 3400m2 flat area of paving that is continually covered with an inch of water. You can get a perfect reflection of Bordeaux's buildings along the Garonne. A great photo opportunity!
The 'miroir' has another intriguing trick - every so often jets of fine mist squirt from the pavement, covering the 'miroir' with a metre of fog. Of course kids (and adults) love it!! And it is great for everyone on a hot day!
Stock Building
by bugulma
The stock building was built in 80-s of XIX century. It is situated on Place de la Bourse. There were restoration works of the square but the ensemble of buildings look great. Besides, in night when Lionel made for me a city tour, I enjoyed wonderful view of stock lights from the left bank of the river. They reconstructed the square ong time and I was lucky to see renovate one in june 2006.
