Any advice about accomodation, food, transportation and sightseeing at Bordeaux
by bratttb2006
Hi
I and my friends (2 of us) will attend conference at this place Victor Segalen Bordeaux II University, Place de la Victoire, Bordeaux. Please give me any advice how long from airport to this place. How much the taxi fares and the nearest and cheapest hotel or hostel. The reasonable place to eat and the wonderful and best sightseeing to visit during our time at Bordeaux. We will arrive next Tuesday morning from England.

what kind of conference?
airport to the center, not so far around 15mn if it s the good time, could be 1 hour mini if it s the crowded time (bordeaux is arranged to help tramway, buses, .. not cars!)
see my pages about restaurants, i can suggest some of them depend if you prefer meat , fisch, cheese, ....) and your prices possibilities
hotels, i cannot say, there are a lot in the center but as i life there, i don t use them and of course dont know
let me know if you want something

Tramway service
by DavidKerr
If you want to get around Bordeaux then use the Trams they cover a large part of the centre and are being expanded to the Suburbs and they are the Green alternative to using your car for every journey.
The trams run from the Gare St Jean right along the river to reach the centre of Bordeaux where you can find excellent shops and cafes etc and do not be afraid to explore for it is in the back streets that you can find some of the best Bars and Cafes for that snack or meal.
Tour Pey-Berland
by nzobx
The Pey-Berland tower is isolated from the rest of the cathedral, it's quadrangular with an octogonal top.
Buit between 1440 and 1450, the golden statue of the vigin Mary has been added in 1862.
The view is really nice but you'll have to give the amazing sum of 4 euro 60 to be allowed to climb the steps....

This tower holds the clocks that goes with St-Andre's cathedral and was build in 1440.
What struck me is that both St-Andre's Cathedral as St-Michel's Basilica have seperate towers. Maybe there is a specific reason for this but i don't know what it could be
Parking along the Garonne River

"Garden in summer"
We were intrigued by this huge topiary of a flower basket in the park . . . filled with flowers, naturally.
The park was lovely until we were all ushered out so they could set up a rock concert that was undoubtedly given later in the day. We didn't return to see (or hear).
"Eglise St. Louis de Chartrons"
Be sure to see the inside of this beautiful church.
There are more photos in a Travelogue below. It's a walk through the center of town.
"Gorgeous Fountain"
This was the first day of the July soldes (sales) so the pietons area was in a frenzy of the French buying public. We were exhausted trying to walk through them and found rest and respite at this lovely square.
January and July are the two sales months in France. If you like sales, this is the time to go. If you can't stand crowds, avoid sales like the plague!
