Monument dux Girondins Fountain
As we were walking along the city, we came across this monument flanked by fountains. The fountains symbolize triumph of Liberty & the Republic and is crowned with Liberty breaking from her shackles.

Hi there,
I am a first time visitor to Brodeaux. I would like to travel to Bilbao from Paris. I am planning to reach Brodeaux from Paris by TGV and catch a bus or train to Bilbao / Spain. I would like to have suggestions to plan my travel by road / train to Bilbao to reach before 7PM on any day. Please let me have your valued suggestions... Thanks. Bala
Pedmar's suggestion is great - and I should add that the trains from Irun do not go to Bilbao. You'll need to go to San Sebastian (about 15 minutes by train from Irun) and then catch a coach - and that's about 1.25 hours. Although there is a narrow gauge train that connects San Sebastian with Bilbao it takes about 4 hours and I've heard is very spectacular.
Sorry I don't have any info on buses from Bordeaux, but suspect it may require a number of changes.
Isn't there TGV to Biarritz, or at least a reasonable air fare. From Biarritz it is about a two hour bus ride to Bilbao. Karl
The TGV train from Paris will take you to either Hendaye or Irun. Irun is just inside Spain and the last station for the TGV trains. You will have to leave very early to reach Bilbao by 7pm. I calculate that you will need to be in Hendaye/Irun at 1430hrs at the latest as the train from there to Bilbao takes about 3.5 hours with a change of train needed in Donostia/San Sebastian.
From Hendaye or Irun you can indeed take the little trains of Euskotren all the way to Bilbao.
For some reason, Euskotren does not show up on the international journey planners and on-line ticket sales sites, but their trains run every 30 - 60 minutes across the whole network.
You can get their train times at www.euskotren.es and note that their site is only in the Spanish and Basque languages.
Hope that helps.
Another option is to go to Hendaye. There leave the SNCF station and cross the road to the Euskotren station. From that station there are departures every half hour to San Sebastian/Donostia where you can change for a train to Bilbao. Advantages are that you will spend less time waiting for connections as Euskotren runs quite frequently, and it's cheap.

Bordeaux is a wine lovers paradise. Its famous red wines are recognised all over the world. The prices are good here and the quality is excellent. We tried many locals wines at the restaurants in the city and at a wine festival which coincided with our visit.
Cathedrale St. André is another great example of gothic architecture in France. The tower behind in the picture is the Pey-Berland Bell Tower. It name comes from an archbishop who build this tower in 1440. It was sold 1783 and was used as a factory. Finally Cardinal Donnet bought it back and a bell was installed.
From the 'Place de la Comedie', walking along the 'Cours 30 Juliet' we get to the 'Esplanade des Quinconces'. One of the tallest monuments in Bordeaux, the Monument to the Girondins and the Republic, dominates the east side of this wide promenade.
This monument was erected at the end of the 19th century to honor the deputies of the revolution.
The Musee des Beaux Arts is located in a cramped wing of the Hotel de Ville which was rebuilt in the 19C museum style after a destructive fire in that century. (We did not take a picture of the exterior). There are some Old Masters distributed after the Revolution and plus a fine collection of Dutch Masters (from LaCaze, a local collector) plus a large fine group of 19C French works collected thereafter. Modern works continue to pile up. There aree Madonna and Clid with Sts. by Perugino and a Holy Family by Veronese and many others.
