Font de Gaume -- caves near Sarlat

by johnandphoebe

I'm getting desperate. Knowing that getting tickets on the day we want to tour is an iffy thing, I'm trying to make reservations in advance (May 4th). I've tried emailing fontdegaume@monuments-nationaux.fr which is the address for the caves listed on the Centre des Monuments Nationaux page. No luck. My email comes back as undeliverable. Someone suggested that my hotel (in Sarlat) might handle it for us. They answered that they were unable to reach them by phone (maybe too early in the season?) and gave me the same email address as above. So...anyone have any ideas? I speak no French but guess I will try their listed phone number if all else fails.

Thanks,

John

Yeah, try sending an email to isabelle.de-santerre@monuments-nationaux.fr and asking her if/when the ability to make reservations will open, and note your desired time and date in case she does it for you.

If that email bounces back, then try sending the same request by fax to (33) (0)5 46 30 02 22 (look up the appropriate dialing instructions) as sometimes fax will get a better response if for no other reason that 40+ years of experience with fax and much fewer with email...

Open daily except Saturdays
15 May - 15 September 9.30 am - 5:30 pm
16 September - 14 May 9:30 am - 12:30 pm and 2 pm - 5:30 pm
Closed 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November, 25 December

The site lists the above opening hours. On May 4 they should be open 9:30 AM until lunch time and again from 2 PM until 5:30 PM.

Go ahead and call and open with bonjour. I'm betting the minute they hear your pronounciation, they will start speaking English. Also, don't forget about the time difference when you call and do call within the hours listed above. We live in California and there is a 9 hour time difference. Don't know where you live, but you can figure it out. If your hotel has called during lunch, they will not get an answer.

I didn't realize it was covered on the Monument Pass. Good news because we're going to be there mid-April 'til May 1. BTW, do you realize May 1 is a major holiday in France? You may see a parade and some sights may be closed. Enjoy holiday activities and save other things for May 2.

OK, here's the full story: The caves are open every day except Jan 1st, May 1st, November 1st, November 11th and December 25th. I called the listed number (011 followed by the number with the first zero omitted) and, as soon as the lady heard my poorly pronounced bonjour, she began in English. Very helpful. The earliest tour (9:30) was full but she gave me a reservation number for a later tour. (English tour is 11:00).

A big thanks to all who answered.

I really would not worry about getting tickets. I went there the third week of June in 2009 and called them from Les Eyzies (town just a short ways away with a WONDERFUL Museum of Prehistory). They said they had an opening - I rushed there, rushed up the hill breathless to the gate for my 1 PM tour time to find that they were quite relaxed about starting on time - I waited 20 minutes with two other people before the guide showed. We were the only people on the tour. I too had been afraid of not being able to get a ticket. What I would do is head there from Sarlat in the morning and stop at Font de Gaume on the way and arrange tickets. If need be you can head into Les Eyzies for the Museum and lunch and then go back for an afternoon tour. It is a short distance between the town and the caves. BTW, I had no trouble with them answering the phone when I called.

So glad it all worked out for you John. We're looking forward to visiting too . . . although we'll probably call after we arrive in the area. Our time is very flexible while we're there; a convenience.

Enjoy your trip.

We were there in late October and couldn't reserve a spot. We asked the tourist office in Sarlat to help us and they said it wasn't possible. Turns out we didn't need a reservation off-season; however, the only tours were in French. Somebody told us that all the guides speak English too, but they didn't say a single work and told us they spoke only French. Luckily there were some kind ladies in the group who translated for us, as our french is minimal.
