    Best Country Manor Setting

    by

Many people consider this untouched region of France to have the most picturesque villages and towns in all of France. We won’t disagree. We picked up a rental car at the Bordeaux airport and drove the 3 hours to a little village called Carlucet. Eric and Helen’s (Brits) country manor is set on rolling hills about 15 minutes from the largest town in the area Sarlat de la Caneda. Sarlat has a world famous Saturday Market Day, not to be missed.

Their place is a fully restored old stone manor with several buildings and a wonderful swimming pool. We arrived hungry and Eric directed us to walk up the hill to the “Black Duck”. Since this is Perigord, home of Fois Gras and everything else duck; the place serves 6 items, with 5 being some sort of duck. Black is because they serve black Guinness on tap. Thus we were introduced into the region where every menu is full of duck (canard): duck breast, duck confit, duck magret, duck pate, duck Fois Gras, duck neck sausage, pressed duck leg, duck gizzards, and walnuts. We actually found it exciting and ate some form of duck by choice several days in a row. The region is very proud of their heritage and local cultures. Someone told us that you can always tell the Brits and the Americans, they are ones with a backpack full of everything they own, carrying water bottles.

We spent a day at the Saturday Market in Sarlat and we had so much fun that we went back that evening for dinner and entertainment. The streets were full of street musicians and entertainers, the most street artists we have ever seen at one place. We were glad we stayed out in the country, since the busyness of the city was constant.

On Eric’s advice, we rented our canoes starting out in Vitrac, canoeing on the Dordogne River to La Roque Gageac, then to Beynac. Beynac is the village where the movie “Chocolate” was filmed. We stopped along the way and explored villages and rested. It took us over 3 ½ hours. Then we got a free shuttle bus ride back to the starting point. Along the way were the caves of prehistoric cliff dwellers, chateaus, and swimming in the shallow river.

Since most of the villages are only about 10-30 minutes apart, we spent our eight days there discovering several of the villages. We learned that if a town ends in “nac” or “ac” that means it is on water.

We stayed at Les Charmes de Carlucet for a week in October 2007 and found it to be an ideal base for visiting the Perigord Noir. We had considered staying in Sarlat-le-Canada, but were glad we chose Les Charmes, as we fully enjoyed the idyllic country setting, comfortable accomodations and the graciousness of our hosts. Our room, located in a building built of typical Perigord yellow stone, was spacious and comfortable, with modern conveniences. We were served a copious breakfast, including a daily surprise, in an enclosed porch where we had a view of the grounds. It was a very pleasant way to begin each day. Our hosts were knowledgeable about the Perigord Noir and helpful in planning itineraries. They also recommended local restaurants, both casual and upscale, that we enjoyed more than those we sampled in Sarlat. Staying at Les Charmes did not cause us to miss out on the medieval center of Sarlat, as it was an easy and pleasant drive away. We highly recommend Les Charmes to anyone visiting the Perigord Noir.

Great Bed And Breakfast near Sarlat.

Booked this place having seen its Website and comments on Tripadvisor. The truth is you get real value for money, a room rate that includes so much more: big and clean rooms, daily service, huge choices at breakfast, fridge in pool house for our use, picnic facilities, Wifi, Helen and Eric will even book restaurants for you, and they know where to go. A great plus is the little pub only 5 minutes walk away or 2 minutes in the car that serve a huge selection of beers and lovely local wine. We had dinner for 3 and loads to drink and had change from 50 euros. Sarlat is beautiful though overcrowded, so the position of Les Charmes allowed us to go places without losing 40 minutes battling through Sarlat traffic. My memories are of a good stay, nice owners willing to help but not in your face. The house, the setting, the views, pools and overall experience mean that i will start looking at B&B's more often, rather than hotels which i find more and more inpersonal.

Great Dordogne B & B and Gites so near Sarlat

by TripAdvisor Member bladesgirl

This is the most beautifully situated property we have ever stayed at in the Dordogne. The grounds are extensive, loads of space, plus a swimming pool and so relaxing! The view over to the village church is exquisite! The owners, Eric and Helen, made us extremely welcome without being obtrusive - and their children are a delight! Their pride in the property and the area is infectious! They were invaluable for booking us into fantastic restaurants and giving sight-seeing tips about places we wouldn't have chosen ourselves! Sarlat is close and definitely worth a visit although quite busy and it was nice to get back to the tranquility of Les Charmes de Carlucet and relax. The rooms were extremely comfortable and spacious and everything was catered for. The breakfast consisted of the most beautiful slection of local, fresh bread and pastries. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners and their attention to details is very noticeable - they were only too happy to fix us up with a packed lunch to help with our day! Can't wait to go back!

Wonderful Place

My husband and I stayed at Les Charmes de Carlucet for two nights in April 2008. We were very impressed and would highly recommend this B & B. We stayed in the Castlenaud room which was spacious, clean and comfortable. Eric and Helen were wonderful hosts. Eric was very helpful in helping us pick out the "best" things to see during our too short stay in the area. Both he and Helen gave us excellent restaurant suggestions. Breakfasts were also very good. We hope to return to this area someday soon and would definitely stay here again. Thank you Eric and Helen.

Top quality place, lovely warm owners.

Having read the previous reviews, the choice of where to stay was easy! And we really enjoyed it. From the moment we arrived we got loads of information from Helen, which ment we could leave our guide book in the car and have our local travel consultant plan our extended weekend. We were shown to a huge bedroom , and nearly more space that the two of us have in our Bordeaux appartment! After a comfortable night in a much larger bed than usually found in France we were given a super breakfast . Every morning was a joy, being spoiled with a lovely varied choice of breakfast items, followed by a swim in that huge swimming pool which is heated, it was great to have warm water as the weather was cold for that time of year. The owners are helpful, witty, though not in your face. They booked us into local restaurants every night, which we proberbly would not have found on our own. On our first night, we really enjoyed the Black Duck, a little pub and restaurant only five minutes walk away. The villages around, Sarlat, St Genies and St Leon sur Vezere are so beautiful. Higlhy recommended place!

Paradis!

We first stayed at Carlucet in 2006 for 1 week and it was so good we've just come back from another 2 weeks there in early June. It is quite simply the best gite I have ever stayed in, beautifully restored and kitted out. It has everything you could want to provide a perfect holiday. The owners, Eric, Helen and their two lovely children, are friendly and attentive but unobtrusive. They make sure you have everything you need and are only too willing to point you in the right direction for good restaurants, trips out and will even organise babysitters (essential with two small children of our own!).
We rented the larger gite, Beaux Reves with its own pool, but there is a larger communal pool which is great for younger children. Our 4 year old son spent every evening playing football on the lawn or should I say football pitch and he misses it greatly.
All in all it is a great place to stay, there is so much to keep you at Carlucet that it is just lovely to sit by the pool even when the weather isn't terribly clement. There is also an enormous amount to visit in the area and we still haven't scratched the surface so we will no doubt be returning for a third visit.
The Chee family.

Les Charmes is simply charming!

by TripAdvisor Member fomites

Les Charmes is an idyllic home away from home in a beautfiul corner of the world. We loved our 5 day stay in the Dordogne- it was absolutely perfect! Eric & Helen are the consummate hosts. They really make your time at Les Charmes special due to their warmth and helpfulness. Eric basically planned our itinerary for us according to what we wanted to see, and we saw some amazing things! Highlights include the caves at Peridac, and hot air ballooning with Patrick over the Dordogne valley- absolutely breathtaking. The best thing was coming home to a lovely spacious room at the end of each day, and a very comfy bed. We would highly recommend Les Charmes to all our family and friends, and hope to return some day! One tip: follow Eric's (impeccable) instructions on how to get there, rather than programming your GPS and switching off your brains (which is what we did) as you might well end up in Carlucet LOT, not Carlucet Dordogne!

Charmes de Carlucet - a perfect place to stay.

by TripAdvisor Member travelling-geoff

My wife and I stayed five nights here at the start of our French holiday. We found the "Charmes" to be a delightful and comfortab;e base for exploring this part of France.
It is situated in a quaint little hamlet with stunning v iews all around but is perfectly sited for trips into the surrounding countryside, far more than cound be fitted in during our stay.
Helen and Eric were excellent hosts and I would advise any guests to take note of their restaurant recommendations as we had really good food in places we would never have found by our selves.
The room was large and comfortable (as was the bed - important when you have a back problem!)
The grounds were spacious and with an inviting pool, unfortunately the weather was very unseasonable and we had to give it a miss.
Eric is very knowledgable about the local places of interest - we particularly wanted to visit the cave paintings at Font de Gaum and tickets are in short supply but with his suggestion of an early breakfast and start we had an excellent time at the caves.
They have put a vast amount of time and energy into renervating this beautiful house and it shows
A marvelous start to our holiday and it put us in the right frame of mind to enjoy the rest of our trip.

Geoff and Sheila Hobson, Northumberland.
