Visit the 11C Romanesque Church in Carsac

by hquittner

Carsac (pop. 950) is 7 km south of Sarlat by the D704. We headed ther on a drive we took to see the nearby Perigord towns and castles on the Dordogne: Domme, Cenac, Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and others. (See our Tips under each place). Before we took the D703 west to see them, we searched for and easily found this church in a colorful setting out of town. It is 11C Romanesque with a recessed multi-arched doorway set on simple columns. The nave vault is 16C and the church glass is modern. Be sure to look outside at the apse where there is a display of early carved modllions along the roof line. They are well worth stopping to look at.

Maison de la Boetie

by Canadienne

This beautiful house was the birthplace of the celebrated Etienne de la Boetie (1530 - 1563). Boetie was a judge and author; he served with his close friend Michel Montaigne in the Bordeaux Parliament. He is best known for writing a scathing attack on government called "Discours de la Servitude Volontaire" that later inspired revolutionaries. . .and finally my university French courses come to some use. :-)

Most visited place in the Dordogne?

by Kettleman

We stayed near Sarlat on our way north from the Med to home in the UK - see tips for place.

In the day the town was still full of tourists and in the evening it was chokka! Booking a restaurant table was a good idea!

If you are a "want away" tourist, virtual or otherwise, Sarlat isn't for you.

Saying that though there are plenty of nice buildings in the old centre of town and a fine cathedral.

In summer, there a re plenty of "swampies" providing street entertainment, much of what I saw was good with the occasional turkey.
