Because of the Ecole de Gendarmerie, the sleepy town is host to students of various nationals. The french government use this facility to train international student based on Bilateral agreement. Generally, the West of France has its own flavours. It is acote de la mere, and the air and ambience is unique. Also, the people are very private and have deep family values and ties, when compared to the inhabitants in the French Central.
For any visitor to Rochefort, a visit to this historic place is a must..There is a lot of history to be learnt here, and visiting here is just about the best way to learn the obscured history of the French Naval developements. My foundest memory about this place is the efforts put in place to restore this once important Heavy rope making industry for Battle Ships to a tourist attraction.
In order to construct the Hermione the exact way it was, experts such as this gentleman were hire from all over Europe to reconstruct every tools and seaman equipments the way they were done in the XVIIIth century. This goldsmith was caught by my camera molding some of the parts for the Hermione currently under construction in Rochefort.
This is few kilometers from Rochefort and a good tourist in this environment should not miss this place. It was said, that Napolion was on this Island after the loss of the battle of Waterloo.
