Normandian corner with a great view
"Avranches, the gateway to Mont-Saint-Michel"
Avranches is a mediocre town in the South-Western corner of Normandy, reaching out towards Bretagne. It is one of the gateways to reach the spectacular Mont-Saint-Michel. It was well known for it's magnificent cathedral from where the bishop of Avranches controlled a vast area in Normandy and Bretagne. However this cathedral did not survive the French Revolution and was torn apart completely. Now-a-days the Saint-Gervais church is dominating the centre. It is here that you also find the City Park (Jardin des Plants) from where a spectacular view over the bay can be enjoyed. In it, the magnificent Mont-Saint-Michel casts it's shadow over the wide plains that become sea again at high tides.
