SW France /Dordogne Planning help

by edwis

Hey guys! Need your suggestions on planning next summer’s trip. Will arrive into Angouleme via TGV train from CDG (or Bordeaux if that better option). From there, drive to explore Dordogne / Perigord for a week or so. I am looking for a 2 different little villages to stay at for 3-4 nights each as a base for exploring 2 different areas of the region. Quaint B&Bs, historical, eating/drinking, shops, hiking, biking, canoe water action, are all good things we enjoy. Also, Nothing personal, but the fewer tourists the better.
Anyone got good ideas on what places I should consider? Thanks for your kind replies.

Near Bordeaux we stayed out in the boonies at HOSTELLERIE DU CHATEAU DE ROQUES in Puisseguin (a dot on the map). It is actually a Loges de France and you can reserve at http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/recherch/index-ca.htm

If you check the Logis de France web site, you'll notice a link to the Chateaus own web site. It's not overly fancy but is very comfortable, definitely out of the way, has a winery on site, and when we were there, there were no other American tourists, only two Brits and everyone else was French.

They can arrange wine tours for you if you're interested and their restaurant is very good. It is all quite reasonable in cost. It's a spectacular area. We did a day trip into Bordeaux from there. We're not city people on vacation; trying to escape!

I was in that region in October and found some really out of the way charming, rustic, historic villages. I suggest you check my page on an aborted self drive holiday in France. However, to get the ball rolling do consider the remote but picturescue village of Saint-Julian-Aux-Bois or Salers nearby or Conques which was fascinating. Need more info then contact me direct.
