Travel Tips for Caen
Abbaye aux Hommes
William the Conqueror of England built the Abbaye aux Hommes (Abbey of the Men) in 1063 as an attempt to smooth things over with the Pope. Why was the Pope clashing with William the Conqueror? For leading rampaging armies into France? No. For marrying his cousin Mathilde.
This church was one of the few buildings in Caen to survive the Allied attacks in June 1944.
Eglise Saint Pierre
Eglise Saint Pierre sits near the center of Caen near the castle. It was built from the 13th to 16th Century. The original Gothic bell tower was built in the 14th Century but was destroyed in WWII. From 2004 to 2006, the church underwent a massive restoration project to stop damage from water, pollution, and deterioration of the stone.
Caen, France (Normandy)
Caen is not the most fascinating place in the world but it is the home of a wonderful museum, the Caen Memorial, dedicated to WWII and fostering peace nowadays. Certainly worth going out of your way to visit this museum.
