camping and youth hostels and cycling info.
by matt695
Hi,
Can anyone help my friend and I we are travelling around the Normandy region by cycle,in April.
is any one know or recommend of any youth hostels that will accommodate cyclists or if there aware of any good camp-sites we are not looking for luxury just some where to get our heads down for the night.
Is there any rules or regulations on cycling in France that are different to the UK other that the obvious one.
Are there any dangerous areas in the region
many thanks
matt

You might like to get hold of the Lonely Planet 'Cycling France' guide, which will give you loads of info/listings etc.

You'll need a high-vis gilet too....it's the law when cycling outside built-up areas at night, or during the day if the visibility is poor. The gilet must conform to EN471 standard. You can google the standard number for suppliers.

Travel Tips for Caen
A great place for cheap, delish nibbles
by jayhawk2000
A boulangerie is like a deli, where you can buy hot and cold snacks, pastries, chocolates and other nibbles perfect for a quick lunch. The food is delicious, filling and reasonably priced! One of the best we found in Normandy is the L’AUTHENTIQUE BOULANGERIE, rue Ecuyere, Caen. I loved the apple tart with fruit picked from a local orchard, topped with a crumbly cinnamon topping and flaked almonds. You can find this boulangerie in Caen's pedestrian quarter, on your way to Abbaye aux Hommes.
The Castle: St George's Church
by darkjedi
No trace remains of the original church, founded probably in the 10th Century, nor of the Romanesque church which succeeded it in about 1100, only the nave walls survive. Major rebuilding and modification between the end of the Hundred Year’s War (1450) and the beginning of the 16th Century has given the church its present appearance. The main entrance set in the West gable wall destroyed in 1944 and was not replaced in the latest restoration.
The Castle Grounds Offer Many Attractions
by hquittner
The most prominent remnant of the ancient Caen is the Castle which sits on a high ground to the North and West of the town. The massive walls are 12C . There were other fortifications added later. Within its immense grounds are 2 museums, a chapel and lots of green parkland and a few other buildings. Entry to the complex is by the Porte de Champs, a 14C defensive gate that spanned a once existent moat. Many interesting views are available from the ramparts. A visit to the Fine Arts Museum is suggested.
