We drove off the ferry at 7.25pm and 10 minutes later we were parking on the quay directly opposite the hotel and checking in to the hotel.
The entrance is through the small restaurant where we were greeted and then led through a winding route to our first floor room overlooking the harbour. Although we had booked in advance we had the last remaining room and it was exactly as pictured on the website. The spacious bathroom had a huge bath with a spa/sauna/jacuzzi. Everywhere seemed to be recently refurbished and was very comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant and chose one of the more expensive Menus and a good bottle of wine. Service and food were excellent. There is still a smoking area in the restaurant but we non-smokers were not close enough to be affected by it.
UPDATE - ALL RESTAURANTS IN FRANCE ARE NOW NON- SMOKING (added 30/7/2008)
Although the bill for two came to more than we usually expect to pay in a Logis de France I have rated it as Average because of its location, special facilities and general standards and comfort.
89 euros/ £62 for the room 15 euros/£10.50 pdj (a bit steep) 98 euros / £68.70 DB&B inc. drinks, 4 courses and coffee . Taxe de Sejour 1 euro 40.
Good views over the harbour; excellent restaurant; friendly staff and convenient location.
La Regence Hotel: Looking out over the sailing ships in Cherbourg

Hotel (and restaurant!) La Regence

Right in the centre of Cherbourg, this hotel is a good place to stay on an average budget in comfortable surroundings. With a little luck (or on request) you have a nice view over the sailing ships that are in the inner harbour bassin of Cherbourg.
The restaurant of Hotel La Regence is very good, offering a wide range of menu's that are prepared with special care. Recommended also without staying in the hotel itself!
