MONT ST MICHEL

by ckenny

Hello again, Could someone please tell me how far is Mon St Michel from Honfleur and how to get there. I do not have a car. Also any ideas on reasonably priced hotels in Honfleur for one night.

Many Thanks Connie

Driving wise it is about 200 kilometers. Probably the best way to get there is by train to Rennes (probably out of La Havre) and then taking a bus to Mont St. Michel. I drove last time, but I seem to recall posts here on VT that talked about a regular bus service from Rennes.

This is not an easy journey to make without a car. Neither Mont St Michel nor Honfleur are on a train line and the French bus services are very localised. You're probably best to do the journey with a combination of bus and train -

Mont St Michel to Pontorson (the nearest station to MSM) 15 mins by bus, they run regularly throughout the day

Pontorson to Caen by train - about 2 hours, no changes
(check timetable here - http://www.francetravelguide.com/bus-travel-in-france.html)

and then a bus (Route 20)to Honfleur - a bit less than 2 hours

We went from Bayeux in the Hotel bus to Mon St Michel and I wonder if the hotels in Honfleur might have a bus too. Not a tour.. the driver dropped us off gave a little advice and picked us up later. It would be a deal further from Honfleur.

You could also enquire from Frederic Guerin Normandie Tours if getting there by train and bus is tricky

fredericguerin@wanadoo.fr

or else stay in Bayeux at Hotel Churchill and go on their bus.

The latter options may be more expensive options of course but maybe they would advise. Marg

It's a good drive from Honfleur to Mont St Michel. I think with public transport you will spend a long time travelling.

Hi Connie,

I stayed at Hôtel du Dauphin twice, a 2 star, modest and pleasant place. Right in centre, close to the Old Port.

Stayed once at Hôtel Le Cheval Blanc, a 3 star, more upscale than the first. In front of the Old Port. They offer good rates on their website.

Travel Tips for Honfleur

Everbody Loves a Parade

by hquittner

This assemblage of musicians gathered before the Lieutenance (16C building block). We could discern no holiday or funeral. Is this one of the mandatory manifestations of local color for the tourists? We did not follow and know not where they went.

Study the Vieux Bassin

by hquittner

The Bassin (Dock) is the inner harbor, today a place for yacts. The commercial trade (mostly wood importing is in the outer harbor. This was created in 1668 by Duquesne under orders from Colbert as a defensive measure and was mostly involved in exports to England. Many famous Normans had explored Canada from here in the previous century. Note the drawbridge.

A WOODEN CHURCH

by BerniShand

The church of Saint Catherine is made entirely out of wood, with the exeption of the foundations, and has two naves, the first of which was built in 1468 and the second31 years later. The roof looks like the hull of a ship

Honfleur, a Pisturesque Village

by dimilag

"Explore it on foot"

Holfleur is must see when you visit Normandie. It is asmall town located on the mouth of the Seine River. There are a lot of traditional Normandie houses a lot of small but excellent restaurants and a very cosy atmosphere that, in a strange way, makes up your mood and encourages the spirit of exploration. It is best for you to park your car outside the village and explore it on foot through its narrow streets and its fancy little squares.

"The Vieux Bassin"

In the Vieux Bassin area there are a lot of small restaurants that serve really good food in normal prices. They all have a fantastic view inside the harbor area.

"The Eglise Ste-Catherine"

During our stay there, we had the chance of exploring Honfeur. We discovered this magnificent wooden church. Clocher Ste-Catherine is the bell tower of the Eglise Ste-Catherine. It is a piece of art. The tower is open daily from 9:00 to 18:30 in summer and from 9:00–12:00 & 14:00–18:00 during the rest of the year.

I HAVE ALMOST COMPLETED MY HONFLEUR PAGE. PLEASE ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY TO MY PAGE.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

We have some friends who are as mad about travel as we are, so when they recommended Honfleur as a charming place to visit we didnt hesitate......

It was even more lovely than they had described it and full of interesting sights
