War tours

by taylorr1

A group of 12 people are coming to Trouville in May this year to play golf.
Whilst we are there we will have one day (Saturday 22nd May)when we are not playing golf and some of the group are interested in a guided War Tour. (WWI or WWII)
Please can you let me know if there is anything available around Trouville?

Regards
Ross

Hi Taylor
Last year I took my father on a guided tour through Normandy. Our chauffeur picked us up in Paris, but they will pick you up anywhere. They have several vehicle and group size options, as well as multilingual guides. You never know what you are going to get when you sign on over the net, but I can vouch for their veracity. They were excellent and very accommodating. It got a little long because we traveled to and from Paris, but it truly was exceptional. If many of you are splitting costs, it should be fairly reasonable and I highly recommend it. Should you decide to see the sites on your own, you can use their web site to identify many of the places of interest such as Pegasus Bridge,St Mere Eglise, and of course the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. It is a very moving experience.

Pegasus Bridge became the face of the invasion. Allied forces (Brits) secured the bridge. There was, and still remains today, a cafe / home beside the bridge. It was a known meeting place for Germans and Resistance alike. The owner, his wife, and their four year old daughter knew to keep to themselves and not get involved with either side. The parents specifically told their daughter to avoid all patrons. Until one evening when she came in from outside and said there were soldiers outside that did not speak German or French. When her parents asked how she knew this, she said they are right here - and she walked in holding the hand of the British commander. It was the first home liberated in the invasion. The cafe is still there today and is a museum and gift shop. The little girl went on to become the face of French liberty and over the years, has met and dined with countless US and French Presidents, dignitaries, and Generals. Funny thing was when we stopped in to get coffee and see the museum, I was looking at all the news clippings photos on the wall of this beautiful young woman, I noticed that the elderly woman working the cash register, strongly resembled the girl in the pictures. Yes, she was in fact the same little girl. I had her sign my maps and post cards. Not the friendliest person, but I was grateful for her hospitality. Cool story, just thought you would be interested.

Before you go, watch Saving Private Ryan and the the HBO series Band of Brothers(currently on demand on HBO). Then maybe base part of your tour around some of the towns mentioned to get a better historical understanding and appreciation.

Hope this helps

Cheers!

Travel Tips for Trouville-sur-Mer

Where Churchill May Have Bought His Fish

by JohnnySpangles

The towns of Deauville and Trouville are linked at the hip like a pair of Siamese Twins. However, unlike a pair of Siamese Twins, there are only two of them whereas there’d be four of the Siamese twins…if you see where I’m coming from. Anyway, given their proximity my Deauville page is my Trouville Page and vice versa..confused?

Trouville has a very pleasant beach. As well as wielding their brushes down at Honfleur (see my Honfleur page), Monet and Boudin also turned out a few nice canvasses on the beach at Trouville. Indeed one of Monet’s paintings in the National Gallery in London actually contains some grains of sand from the beach mixed in with the paint. However the French aren’t demanding them back, unlike the Greeks and their Elgin Marbles…and on that particular issue, ‘finders-keepers’ is what I say. If any of you aren’t familiar with that piece of Old English Legislation then it comes from the same Law Book that states ‘He That Smelled It Dealt It’.

On the beach at Trouville these days there are plenty of diversions other than peering over the shoulders of impressionists. There’s plenty for the kids to do including amusement rides, a swimming pool, treading in dog-poo and upsetting the locals. There’s also a casino in which Winston Churchill used to gamble away the small hours with other European notables in the 20s and 30s. Indeed it was rumoured that the invasion of Poland but was nothing to do with a German desire for ‘liebensraum’ and more to do with settlement of an outstanding debt that he ran up playing ‘Snap’ with Hitler.

There’s also a fantastic fish market on Saturdays but it isn’t recorded as to whether Churchill ever bought his halibut there.

However, the real attraction of the area is the best value horse racing you’ll find anywhere, especially in August. There are two racecourses in Deauville and throughout August there’s a meeting every other day. There are books of vouchers to be had in campsites and tourist offices that mean you park free, get in free, free gifts for the kids and your only expense is the gambling (which is all on the tote). Even if you don’t get the vouchers it is only a mere three euros for adults. The racecourses are spotless, stylish and families are welcomed. So, all in all, it’s an excellent opportunity to fritter the holiday spending money at little additional expense.

Contrast this with the piece of mail awaiting me on my return to Angleterre that held the wonderful news that Sandown Park Racecourse was happy to offer me their ‘bargain’ entry price of only £15 to one of their evening meetings. Harrumph, I fear they know where they can stick that one.
