Musee Rolin: The Gallo-Roman Finds
by hquittner
In the annex building on the ground floor are a number of interesting and attractive Gallo-Roman finds unearthed in the locality. These range from the fine Chieftan's ceremonial helmet with foliated ear guards, to rough bas-reliefs like the Boatman's pillar at the Cluny; there were well-worked colored mosaics, statuettes of various cults and a ceramic statuette-mold suggesting a local manufacturer.
Musee Rolin: The 15C Sculpture
by hquittner
The old mansion is approached through an interior courtyard and besides the exhibits, the rooms maintain many of their period appointments: doorways and mantels. They have collected several fine 15C sculptures and paintings and modern works too to supplement the Gislebertus and associates treasures. We saw a fine Deposition, a John the Baptist and a St. Catherine (attributed to Jean de la Huerta), all quite good.
Autun is a lovely small town in Burgundy

"Looking for chateaus in Burgundy, we found Autun"
We had driven all over the Burgundian countryside and as we entered Autun, we immediately spotted the cathedral. It was definitely worth a stop. There was parking right in front of it, lots of restaurants, a museum and a wonderful fountain.
By now we've seen it in sunshine and rain and it is beautiful in either.
"The sun does not shine every day"
This was a cold rainy day in May. There were many rainy days on that trip. We grabbed our umbrellas and went sightseeing anyway sometimes in mud, but pleasant towns like Autun protected us from the mud . . . and if you want to avoid tourists (except us, of course), go in the rain. It was very quiet!
"Ah, sunshine . . ."
A lot more sun in July! This is the lovely fountain by the church. On another trip, we ate in a restaurant by the fountain and it was cold, windy and rainy so the restaurant was warm, dry and friendly.
The parking faces this fountain and you can walk all over Autun from here.
Autun

About 45 Km to the west of Beaune and 85 Km from Dijon is the 2000 year old village of Autun. Founded by the Emperor Augustus 2000 years ago, it was known as the "sister and rival of Rome". Although many of the original Roman structures were destroyed thought the ages, many of the original sites are still intact such as two of the original gates to the city, and the amphitheater.
