Viewing the Last Judgment Polyptych
by hquittner
In 1450, Chancellor Rolin engaged Rogier van der Weyden of Brussels, who had just returned from a long and successful visit to Italy, to paint a giant polyptych for the Great Hall of the Hotel-Dieu. At this time Rogier and most of the art connoisseurs recognized him as the most talented artist in the Western world. The altarpiece of “The Last Judgment” that he produced is in seven vertical panels (560 cm in width!) and includes a taller central area. The outer two panels on each side fold to close the vivid scene. On their backs are placed portraits of the founders: Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins.(You may remeber him in a Louvre painting by van Eyck). Central to these are four grisaille paintings of two saints and the Annunciation. Many centuries later when it became recognized as a very valuable masterpiece (19C) , it was taken from its original place in the chapel of the hall, restored at the Louvre, and finally set in a specially built room off the Salle St.-Louis, where today it is protected against temperature and viewers (no flash pictures). It is part of the tour and as a bonus at one point in the viewing a large motorized magnifying glass passes before the panels, stopping at certain points to reveal Rogier’s meticulous detail and brushwork. The risky chance that your pictures will be satisfying when you get home (mine were not) suggests that you consider buying substitutes at the gift shop (we did and a few are included here, shame on us) . The setting of the work is such that it is extremely rare to find this work in Art compendiums; this is another reason to buy a copy.
