Travel Tips for Beaune

Streets and trompe-l'oeil

by Mikebond

Beaune being quite a small town, it has a lot of porphyry streets with shops where you can go for a stroll. The squares are nice and not too busy. The one in the third photo should be Place Carnot.
Moreover, like most French towns, also Beaune has buildings with trompe-l'oeil paintings, like the ones you see in the fourth and fifth pics of this tip.

Hôtel-Dieu - Grande Salle: beams and Christ

by Mikebond

In the Grande Salle, you should have a look at the beautiful beams of the ceiling. They are decorated with a natural motif and at their ends there are mouths of dragons. Such sculptures at the ends of beams are not rare in France.
You should also look at the sitting Christ, on a wall of the room. This is not one of the positions in which He is usually represented.

Hôtel-Dieu Cuisine - Kitchen

by breughel

The kitchen of the Hospital is spectacular with its furnace provided with two large warm water taps in the shape of swan necks and its hearth with a large articulated bracket which makes it possible to bring closer the cauldrons to the fire.
There is also the automat called “Messire Bertrand” who seems to turn the handle of the spit from the 18th c. The Gothic fireplace with two hearths is much older. The general aspect of the kitchen as presented today is that of the years 1900.

Beaune, Great Wine, Food, Art & History!

by Beausoleil

"Hotel Dieu is worth a visit in Beaune"

I always think of Burgundian roofs when I think of Beaune. The funny thing about Hotel Dieu is you don't see the patterned tile roof until you are actually inside. We visited Beaune several times before we visited the Hotel Dieu and then we wished we had visited sooner. It is an amazing place and certainly worth the time it takes away from wine tasting.

"Hotel Dieu (a former hospital)"

This is the inner courtyard of Hotel Dieu. Yes, there are tourists!
