GETTING FROM NICE TO PARIS? stopping in small towns?

by questions123

In Late August we are spending 5nights in Nice. After Nice we want to go back to London (Via Paris). We are hoping to stop on the way, and see a nice town/wine region etc. Does anyone know if there is a train from Nice to Bordeux region, and then to Paris??
Also is there a train direct from Nice to Paris? how much would that cost/how many hours? do you need to book in advance?

Thanks!

Going from Nice to Paris while passing through Bordeaux is like going from London to Manchester while passing Cardiff: not really efficient. There is certainly a TGV going straight from Paris to Nice (and back) (cfr. Voyages-sncf.com). However, if you are keen on visiting a wine region: the Bourgogne (Burgundy) region is right on the way from Nice to Paris and is just as important as the Bordeaux.
Coincidentally, I did the same journey just a few weeks ago. We stopped in a small town named Chagny and stayed in a hotel called Lameloise. It was quite expensive but the restaurant was absolutely devine. From there, we took the "route des Grands Crus", through the beautiful city of Beaune (the "Hotel Dieu" is a must see), and further on to Dijon, while tasting (and buying...) whine in the small world-renowned villages in between (Chassagne-Monrachet, Meursault, Vougeot, Gevrey-Chambertin, etc.). From Dijon, there's a highway going almost straight to Paris.

I was also going to suggest Burgundy instead of Bordeaux. I don't know how you feel about the wines comparatively, but the scenery is more appealing to me in the Burgundy region and with your itinerary, it would be more convenient.

Dijon is my second favorite city in France (Paris is first!) so I always recommend Dijon. The suggestion of Beaune is excellent and visiting wineries in the area is great fun.

You can check rail connections at http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ or other transportation options at http://www.france.com (scroll right and click on rail travel which also includes buses.

Have a great trip.

Another suggestion: If you go to Beaune, consider Hotel Grillon near the center of town but set in a lovely garden. http://www.hotel-grillon.fr/

We've stayed there a few times and it is lovely. There is a train station in Beaune.

There are a couple other things you can do on VT. First, click on the names of people here who answer you. This takes you to their Home Page where you can click on their Travel Pages for areas you want information.

Also, type Dijon or Beaune or Bordeaux or whatever interests you into the VT search window above and do a Destination search and you will come up with a LOT of information, including transportation tips.
