Hôtel de Bourgogne: Sleeping right next to the abbey

Update July 2008:

So far I have stayed three times in this hotel, in August 2004, March 2006 and in July 2008.
In the summer the garden is in full bloom and looks very nice. In March, it was cold and on our last day we had lots of snow. But the heating in our room was working, we could adjust the temperature as we liked it and we had a very comfortable stay again.

We usually have a twin, with a large bathroom and a separate toilet - always a good idea.

Breakfast is not included in the room price, it's 10,50 Euro a person. As they offer a large selection of cheese it's worth it .

The staff is very friendly and when my French failed me discussing the traffic conditions, they spoke some English as well.

This was true for our stay in March 2006. The last time, July 2008, nobody spoke any English. I think it depends who is on duty at reception.

A private garage is offered for 9 Euro a night, but as there is a large parking lot near the hotel, we parked there for free. I saw the garage, it's more like a barn and manoeuvring in there can be tricky.

Unique Quality: The hotel is right next to the abbey which you can see from the windows. It's from 1817 and it's one of the most crooked places I've ever been into. By "crooked" I mean lots of curves and bends when walking up to the rooms, but that adds to the charm of this old place.

This time, July 2008, my mother had come with us. She has problems walking and could never have managed the steep stairs up to the rooms. The hotel has a room which they say (quote from their website)"has been specially designed for people with reduced mobility".

This is not quite true. There are no steps, that's true, but to get there you have to walk on gravel, as the room is in the garden. It is hard enough to walk on gravel even without any problems, but try managing this with a cane, a walker or a wheelchair.

Also, in order to get to the room , you have to leave the hotel and walk through the garden.In rain , this was quite a challenge, managing a walking cane, the gravel plus holding an umbrella at the same time.

The room itself was large, enough space between the furniture, but the doors of the wardrobe opened to the outside, they were no sliding doors. Again a needless extra difficulty for people with walking problems.

The room costs 125 Euro without breakfast. It is a very nice room, with a great view on the abbbey, but "specially designed for people with reduced mobility" is simply not true.

I still like this hotel and will stay there again when I'm in Cluny the next time.
