Logis de France: Stay where the French stay

by Beausoleil

When traveling through France, if we haven't rented a small house or if we haven't booked accomodation, we always look for a Logis de France and have never been disappointed. This is a chain of small family-owned hotels that nearly always include an excellent restaurant. There is at least one Logis to be found in nearly every town and village in France and they are invariably clean, friendly and have free parking.

Many of the Logis are "theme" hotels. That is to say they have special accomodations for bicycle riders, fisherman, boaters, even equestrian logis. There are Logis of Character that are in historic buildings and Logis of Silence that are in especially bucolic areas.

We have stayed in logis that were entirely French-speaking, logis that had shared bathrooms or conversely private spas, logis that were in chateaus with gourmet restaurants. There is a logis for everyone's tastes and one for nearly any budget.

The central booking agency is very useful but you can also book directly with most of the hotels if that is more comfortable for you.

I can't put a "true" price range for this Tip since logis come in all price ranges.

Gite #60 in Bard-le-Regulier: Stay in a Gite de France

by Beausoleil

We've visited Burgundy often and always stay at Hotel Grillon in Beaune. We love it and love the area, but wanted to spend some real time in Burgundy so were looking for something out of town and that cost a lot less than a hotel. When we are in long-term visiting mode, we usually turn to the Gites de France, a wonderful organization that rents out houses and apartments all over France, often in picturesque rural areas.

We found this beautiful little house (2 bedrooms, 2 baths, full kitchen) in the tiny village of Bard le Regulier about an hour from Beaune. It is on a dairy farm and the gentleman of the house is a local town councilman.

The house was spacious, clean, had a fabulous view and the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. The cost varies from 175 euros a week in low season to 320 euros a week in high season so, as you can see, it is very affordable even in high season.

What appealed to us was the fact that we were out in the countryside with easy in and out access, could interact with people who lived in the area and had incredible views from our private courtyard.

The host family was wonderful; the farm was fun and we could zip all over Burgundy without having to face city traffic getting started each day. We had a full kitchen but only ate breakfast there. We had our main meal wherever we were sightseeing that day and then had a picnic in our wonderful private courtyard in the evening. We attended the local church and shopped the local shops, indeed, were even sold half of a shop-owners baguette one evening when the entire town had run out of bread. Not many places would offer you half their dinner!

The cost per person (as requested by VT) would be 22.85 euros a night at high season and about half that during low season. We were there midseason so in the middle of the range.

If the link below doesn't work, type Bard-le-Regulier into the Gites de France web search window or click on Bourgogne and then click on Cote d'Or; it is Gite #60. Or you can copy and paste http://www.gites-de-france.com/location-vacances-bard-le-regulier-gite,gites21_b2011.1.60.G.html

A delightful bed and breakfast

by amambaw

We stayed with Maria Adao at her bed and breakfast in Puligny-Montrachet. It was delightful. Maria is a wonderful hostess; her spread at breakfast is superb and she is very willing to help you out in every possible instance. The B&B has several rooms, including an apartment off the main house with a small kitchen. The region's villages are all very close together so it is easy to visit the area even if you only have a bicycle.

One thing to note is that Maria does not speak much English. If you speak French or Portuguese, you're in business.

Maria offers a traditional continental style breakfast every morning on her sunny patio. Mingle with other guests and chat over fresh coffee, croissants from the local bakery, or homemade donuts. The rooms are clean and well maintained. If you have questions about the region or where to find something, your hostess will be more than willing to help you out.

Chateau de Ribourdin: Lovely Little Chateau near Auxerre, Burgundy

by JocelynR

Lovely chateau in peaceful setting. We stayed there twice, once on our way south and because we liked it so much we stayed there on our return.
The Chateau itself is set in lovely gardens in a rural setting but only 8km from Auxerre. The B & B accomodation is in a lovely restored building just across from the chateau. Both rooms we stayed in were spacious and tastefully decorated with en suites. The ground floor room is also suitable for disabled visitors and is a lovely twin aspect room with great views. There is also an open air pool for summer use.
Breakfast was between 8.30 & 9.30. We were served home made bread and jams. Fresh fruit, juice, tea/coffee and cake.
Ideal place to stay is you are looking for peace and quiet in a lovely setting. 70 - 80 euros per night

Peaceful surroundings, lovely garden, pool, great home made bread and tasteful decor.

Sevral to choose from: Gites

by PierreZA

We mostly made use of the self-catering gites. It is highly reccomended.
We rented a gites in Geffrey-Chambertin for 7 nights. We had a view of the vineyards from our doorstep.
It well equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a huge living area with dining area.
Our landlady was very friendly and helpful.
It is also not very expensive, compared to other types of accommodation.
Staying in Gevrey-Chambertin was retrospectively a good choice, as it has the feel of a village and only 12km from Dijon, and about 30min fron Beaune.
Bookings are done from a central ofiice - see website, cannot be booked at tourist offices

Beautiful setting, self-catering, more than essential.

Hotel Rousseau.: Eccentric guesthouse in Beaune.

by Samsoncatdj

This little place was recommended to us by a guidebook. Owned by a little old French couple, it has charmingly old-fashioned rooms. It is very close to the outskirts of Beaune (about 10 minutes walk from the centre). It is clean and very quaint and the owners leave you to yourselves. There is free parking. I would recommend this as a charming alternative to the usual sterile hotel rooms on offer.

Quaint and old fashioned. Nicely decorated. Clean facilities. Off street parking out front.

Vendangeoir d'Orgeval.: Rustic Bed & Breakfast.

by Samsoncatdj

It may be slightly off the beaten track, but this is literally the most beautiful and welcoming bed & breakfast we have ever stayed in. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The accommodation we stayed in consisted of two double rooms set in a small outside cottage away from the main house. The decor and setting in this place is very rustic and the rooms have been beautifully done. The bathroom in one of the rooms is down an antique spiral staircase and situated in a cave-like setting.

The gardens and main guesthouse of this accommodaton are spectacular and the lady of the house has won awards for her garden. The owners are fluent in English and are very warm, friendly and hospitable. They are ready to help if you have any needs including any advice about the local area and restaurants. The kitchen where breakfast is provided is also a wonderful sight to behold. The open fire is enjoyed by the cats as much as the guests and the home made jams are mouth-watering.

Extremely beautiful gardens and a farmstyle rustic setting make this place an amazing experience. The rooms and bathrooms are the most beautiful of anywhere.
Very welcoming and helpful owners.

Les 2 Bataves: Wine Province of Bourgogne Wine

by whitebear

The accomodation is from an old schoolfriend who emigrated from Hetherlands to France in 2002. In 2004 we used his B&B as a hotel for a week to see the provinc of Bourgogne and Franche Comte, in 2005 as a passing place on our way to the Provence.

Good breakfast and very cozy

Hotel Les Grands Crus: Along the Wine Route

by Radiomom

The people of Burgundy are very proud and very proper. After Provence and the Dordogne, this country inn was clearly a bit more formal than those more friendly and laid back destinations. This place might have been perfect in one of the Pink Panther movies of the 60s :-) Still, it was very pretty, well located, and extremely comfortable. They helped us reserve a table for our anniversary dinner (walking distance, but as it was rainy we drove) nearby as it was a Saturday night and we didn't want to be left searching for a place on a special occasion!

The bathroom was well lit, huge, really squeaky clean, and had one of those wonderful big soaking tubs. ahhhhhhh.

Le Tilleul: Quiet rural farmhouse to rent!

by Flamegirl

Called the "lime tree", this old farmhouse sits on the edge of a little village upon a hill and has a large garden, which is ideal for both adults and children alike.

The house itself has a double bedroom on the first floor, a family room in the spacious attic, and a twin bedroom downstairs in what once was the old oven! There is also of course a bathroom, toilet, and large room which serves as kitchen, dining room and lounge (including real fireplace), with all modern conveniences.

This location is great if you want to get away from it all. After the bustle of living in a city, the absolute quiet at night is so restful! The air is clean, there are lots of walks in the area, and the wildlife is abundant (it's a good area for bird-watching).

If you come to this neck of the woods to try the local tipple, you don't have far to go. The next-door neighbours are wine growers and are happy to provide a "degustation". In August the whole area hosts a 3-day wine tasting - on foot!

The local towns are a pleasure to visit, particularly Beaune with its traditional roof-tiling and weekend market, though Autun and its Roman ruins is worthy of exploration.
