Travel Tips for Montbard

On the Way to Fontenay Abbey

by hquittner

"Been There"

We have been through Montbard a few times as we went about our sightseeing in the area, but only stopped one time briefly at the Buffon Park. The small industrial city (pop. 8K) is sited at the Brenne River and the Burgandy Canal. We did not visit its several attractions centered around the famous early biologist, born here in 1707 and who spent much of his life here, Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon. He installed a forge in Montbard which has led to an existing specialized metallurgical industry here. More than that, he was the author of the first modern compendium "Natural History" (in 42 volumes, the last 6 by disciples after his death in 1788). He and a disciple were responsible for converting the King's Garden in Paris into the present day Jardin des Plantes (see Our Tips and others under Paris>Things to Do> Parks and Gardens- with many other sites).

"Sights to See"

The local Art Museum has a number of noteworthy works and there are the various Buffon sites as well as soe old buildings. It js a place to consider as a base for visiting the vicinity. The Abbey of Fontenay is only 6 km away (easily reached by cycle from a barge).

"Montbard on the Canal de Bourgogne"

Although probably more famous as a starting point to visit the World Heritage Listed Abbey de Fontenay 8km out of town, the gardens and workshop of Buffon, a Botanist of international repute are also worth a visit. These are situated near the tower perched on top of the hill which dominates the town. Montbard is on the TGV rail line and in fact has light industries including the manufacture of parts for the TGV trains.

"Abbey de Fontenay"

The Fontenay Abbey is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Europe. Founded in 1118 by St Bernard in a marshy Burgundy valley, the abbey has not change its magnificient Romanesque style. Every building has been refurbished religiously.. A must-visit site in northern Burgundy. Don't miss it!
Apart from the visits, many cultural activities (Concerts, theatre, ...) are organized in the abbey.
