Travel Tips for Dinan
The Old Town
by sue_stone
Dinan's old town is the main reason to visit. Its old cobbled streets are so picturesque and are home to some magnificent 15th century half-timbered houses, which lean this way and that, looking like they may collapse if you lean on them.
In the heart of the old town you have place des Merciers and place des Cordeliers. These small, pretty squares are lined with shops and restaurants. Surrounding them are several small streets with some interesting shops and the odd wine bar.
You can check out the Tour de l'Horloge, which is a 15th century clock tower crammed in amongst the timber buildings. You can climb up to its small balcony for views of the old town. Just take a wander around the streets, browsing in shops, photographing half-timber buildings and perhaps enjoying an ice cream.
Wander around Dinan
by rexvaughan
This ancient cobbled street just arrested my attention due to it aged look and charming old stone houses with the colorful windowboxes. Only after reading a little Dinan guidebook did I learn that it was for about 1000 years the main thoroughfare from the port up the hill to the heart of town. It was in pepetual activity then and saw mingling there the burghers, craftsmen, Mont St. Michel pilgrims, merchants, crusaders headed fot the oly land as well as various soldiers at various times. With the building of a viaduct in the mid 19th C caused it to fall into decay, but we saw evidence of a comeback with roofs being repaired and replaced.
Jardin Anglais
by sue_stone
Located behind the Basilique St-Sauveur is the pretty Jardin Anglais (English Garden).
This garden was originally a cemetery but is now a pretty park. I particularly liked it as there was an adorable puppy there when we visited!
The park has city walls (ramparts) running along two sides of it. You can walk to the lovely little Tour Ste-Catherine at the corner of the gardens. This tower offers excellent views down over the port and the viaduct across the Rance Valley.
Basilique St-Sauveur
by sue_stone
Located on cobbled place St-Sauveur is the attractive Basilique St-Sauveur.
This church is made up of a range of architectural styles, with its Renaissance chapels, Gothic features and beautiful Romanesque triple-arched doorway.
It is said that the church is home to the heart of Bertrand du Guesclin, which supposedly rests in a grave slab in the north transept. Bertrand was a knight who defended Dinan against an English siege back in 1357
We snuck into the church for a look and were the only ones about. It was quiet and peaceful, a perfect place for reflection.
Dinan - the bridges
by rexvaughan
Visit the quiet (at least in October) and picturesque Dinan Port or Quay where the town started centuries ago. Here is a contrast of the old and the new. The lower old bridge has what appear to me to be both a Roman and a Gothic arch and a filled in former arch of another shape. The upper bridge is the new one which takes a lot of vehiclular traffic.
