Travel Tips for Guingamp

WELCOME TO MY GUINGAMP EN BRETAGNE......

by eden_teuling

" WHAT AND WHERE......."

La Basilique Notre Dame de Bon-Secours (14th Century) et la Fontaine de la Plomée.

The Basilica of Our Lady de Bon-Secours and the Fountain.

This Basilica is the most important monument and of course a religious one: a Basiilica is Roman Catholic.

It is the only parish church now but there have been more bit those were the churches of the suburbs.

Guingamp is situated in the mid NW of Bretagne..... and the best thing to do is: go there by car (if possible), otherwise RENT A CAR and enjoy touring this whole mesmerizing, richly divers, AREA....

" LA BRETAGNE PITTORESQUE...."

In Spring (when you are lucky, early and quiet) you can see these birds.

There beaks seem to be very heavy but are hollow and not heavy at all.

Only in Spring when they need to impress the female birds their beaks have these wonderfully arranged COLOURS which are such a joy to see if even for one minute!

They are MACAREUX or PUFFINS, a protected species......

" THE FIRST PLACE TO GO WHEN ARRIVING SOMEWHERE."

Yes, that really is the best thing to do . They can tell you everything and sometimes have very nice surprises for you.......if the lady at the Tourist Office somewhere in Sweden hadn't told us about the .. I would have missed a lot of beauty in the woods and in the special museum (also a nice lunch!).

GUINGAMP, CITY OF BRETON ART......

by eden_teuling

" GUINGAMP IN SUMMERTIME......"

In summertime the "JEUDH'IS OF GUINGAMP" , days of free street entertainment , bring the town alive with music and humour.

And for nature lovers, there is a 3 km. stroll to be taken along the banks of the TRIEUX RIVER , right in the heart of the city.

" A LITTLE BIT OF GIUNGAMPS HISTORY..."

Guingamp was founded in the 10th Century around a Castle overlooking the Valley of Trieux.

A sanctuary town of Our Lady and a Monastery town, its old centre has preserved an impressive heritage of monuments that will impress and fascinate you by their quality and variety.

" GUINGAMP A CITY OF TALENT....."

Known throughout France for its FOOTBALL TEAM, the "EN AVANT OF GUINGAMP" , which is placed in the 1st Division, this town is also a tronghold of BRETON CULTURE with the BRETON DANCE FESTIVAL and de "SAINT LOUP" : an exciting, fascinating event which takes place during the 3rd week of August, with dance contests and concerts that will get your feet tapping .

" STREET ENTERTAINMENT....."

which demands an extremely knowledge of the French Language and even then.......but to see the joy, the fun and hear the laughing crowds is a real pleasure...

You can't do otherwise than join the crowd and watch!

HAVE FUN......

" LES MAISONS à PANS DE BOIS....."

These very special looking houses, freshly painted, you can find at the
Place du Centre .

They date from the 16th century .

The parts that are yellow in the house on the left and the brown parts on the right are very old wooden beams.

They are called "CONSTRUCTION à COLOMBAGE" like in the Elsace and Normandie e.g..

" THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY......"

If you went to the OFFICE DU TOURISME and I take it you did then you will have got there several routes to walk, a blue one and a yellow one and there is a white one wich explains every detal of this BASILICA......

Using this you won't miss a thing....

" A VERY BEAUTIFUL "LILAS"......"

This splendidly flowering pink SYRINGA was so impressive that I had to make a picture to add to my special album of flowers...

I have such an AMERICAN SYRINGA in my cold, wet Dutch garden and because we lack enough bright sunny days it doesn't even have half of the flowers this French one has....imagine!

" HIDDEN TREASURE......."

Again such a HIDDEN TREASURE, un cloître, a place of quietness and peace.

Because these courtyards are surrounded by the Monastery's and the Cathedral's walls no sound from the city or town can be heard there which makes the atmosphere so special and a feeling of well-being will envelop you......
