Travel Tips for Saint-Malo

Sensible shoes & rugsack

by annase

There is no luggage storage anywhere in town - except for your hotel maybe, so if you can avoid bringing a bag on wheels, take a rugsack or other sort of bag you can carry. This is because it's a pain to drag a trolley bag along the cobbled streets and this may not be good for items such as lap tops - especially if you arrive in Saint-Malo in the morning and have to spend quite a few hours in town before being able to check in to your hotel in the afternoon. If you go in Spring, bear in mind that it can be very windy at the seaside, so take something warm as it is not very pleasant to feel cold if you were hoping to spend some time outdoors (walking along the walls surrounding the old city or visiting the tidal islands). The streets in the old city are cobbled, so bring some sensible shoes too.

St. Vincent's Cathedral

by rexvaughan

This church dates its beginning to the 12th C but has a mixture of several architectural styles. It is a quiet place to explore and admire a wonderful rose window as well as other stained glass. The church is set in the middle of the narrow intra-muros streets so it is difficult to get a good view or photo, but the spire can be seen from all around the ramparts. The church is actually no longer a bishopric but the locals still designate it as a cathedral. It was severely damaged in WWII but has been very nicely restored. Its major "inhabitant" is Jaques Cartier, born in St. Malo in 1491, whose tomb is within. He made several royally sponsored voyages up the St. Lawrence in Canada in search of a passage to the Pacific. He never found it, but was the first to explore and map this region and is generally regarded as the "discoverer" of Canada.

Look At the Memorials and Treasures in the Church

by hquittner

Despite the 20C destructions , the church has a number of memorials, tombs and treasures: a plaque indicating where cartier was blessed before his first voyage when he discovered Canada and his tomb, as well as tombs of others, a memorial to the Malouins who helped overthrow the Nazis in 1944 to free the city, a revered 16C Madonna, an ancient stoup, a font and other objects not shown here.

St Malo!!!!!!!!

by barney1974

"Stopping point"

St Malo was an overnight stay for me when I went with our high school French club. I remember that there was this pretty cool pool right on the ocean that was filled with pretty clear salt water. It had a high concrete diving board on it. St Malo also has a high wall around the perimter that we walked around. I also remember that night were we all drank way too much and almost got sent home! ha ha. Poor Amber.

Views in the old town of St Malo

by Kate-Me

The Intra Muros area of St Malo is pretty much concrete all the way, so we were quite pleasantly surprised to come across this square and quite large garden area during our wanderings of the old town.
