drinking in france
by seast
I'm almost 18, but heard the french are more relaxed about drinking ages as long as its within reason, is this the case in the bars in saint-malo? Im meant to be going this month and would like to know please

They weren't relaxed about it in the area of SW France I have just spent 4 weeks travelling around!
I'm well over 18 by the way.
There were big signs everywhere stating that serving alcohol to U-18's is interdit, ditto tobacco products. They are having the same issues as the UK right now. The local paper had an article about the excesses of youth in which they used the phrase, untranslated . The price of beer in a bar is frightening - I didn't pay less than €4,80 for 50cl (ie less than an a pint) although as in UK supermarket prices are much, much cheaper.
You might be OK in St Malo, but then again you might be asked to produce ID. No ID, no drink.
Travel Tips for Saint-Malo
Refreshing sea aroun Saint Malo
by Toshioohsako
You can enjoy a superb sea view when you are on the higher gate street of the "fort" Saint Malo. It was still a warm August. Small islands which surround the City are very nice and the blue sea tempts you to as if it were carrying you over the horizon. The blue sea, the beautiful sand beaches, the stout and dignified fort walls, and the stone-built houses and buildings
Great food in the village of Neant sur Yvel
by Beausoleil about Aux Ajoncs d’Or
Here is my journal entry for this lovely little restaurant.
Started with a salmon gratin in a wonderful sauce. For our main course, we had chicken and apples in a crust with the best chicken gravy I’ve ever had. This was accompanied by roast potato wedges and a gratin of cauliflower in cheese sauce. It was all heavenly and the bouncy young waitress seemed overjoyed to be serving us . . . and all the other customers. We had a wonderful little round gateau with a chocolate center accompanied by rum raisin ice cream and peach slices in an exquisite vanilla sauce. Great lunch. Pretty well described above. We couldn't find a restaurant and happened into this little town entirely by accident. What a happy accident! We chose it because there was a parking place right in front. Looked at the menu and decided it would be okay.
What an understatement. It was full of local people and everyone was enjoying themselves. Our waitress was perfect and the food was delicious. It was a delicious and very relaxing meal. It is definitely worth a detour.
Wander the ramparts
by rexvaughan
You can go all the way around the old city (Intra-muros) on the ramparts. It affords great views of the bay and some of the little islands, views of the old walls and severa statues of historic personages. There are also several places where you can descend onto the beach but beware of fast moving tides which can be quite high at times.
Porte St Vincent
by Goner
The Porte St. Vincent is entrance we took to enter the Intra-muros. It's quit impressive, looking like the entrance to a great fort and next to this is the Musee de la Ville Grand Donjon built in 1424 and the Hotel de Ville. However, it's the Grand Porte which is considered the main entrance. There is no entrance fee for the Intra-Muros as many hotels are located within the intra-muros as well as full-time residents.
There is parking in front of and across the street from the entrance.
Walk the Ramparts in Saint Malo
by Beausoleil
"St. Malo"
You can walk around the entire Old Town of Saint-Malo on the ramparts. It's a really fun walk and the views are spectacular from every point. This is a cross-channel ferry just past a cannon . . . the old and the new!
There is a large park area behind the cannon. Other parts of the ramparts take you above the city streets.
What a beautiful city.
"Where do we park the car?"
There is parking right below the ramparts at the harbor. We arrived before July first and a gentleman informed us parking was free until July first. Another big plus for Saint-Malo.
Sigh . . . Paul just told me the parking has changed. He said, "The parking around St malo has now changed. Only free from 8 Oct. to 15 March."
So sad . . . but at least it is still free from Oct. to March. That is good if you go out of season. (See Paul's comment below and THANK YOU PAUL.)
