Do you know what a troglodyte is?

by Beausoleil

After you visit the chateau in Amboise, you will want to walk up to Clos Luce to see Leonardo da Vinci's home and some of his inventions in the park and museum. In the process of walking from the chateau to Clos Luce, you will pass half-timbered buildings and troglodyte houses. The lovely white tuffeau stone used for building the chateaus was dug from the hills resulting in large caves in the hills. Naturally the local people moved into them. Some are fronted with beautiful houses that look perfectly normal until you see them melt into the cliffs behind them. Others are simply the face of the cliff with doors and windows added. Troglodytes are people who live in caves, some magnificent caves and some pretty average looking, but definitely not what most people think of as cave dwellers!

As you walk from the chateau to Clos Luce, look at the cliffs and houses on your left. You will quickly become aware that many houses disappear into the cliffs. You will also see some like those in the photo where there are doors and windows directly in the cliffs. See if you can find the satellite dish on a cave.

Tour des Minimes

by Dariana

It is a gigantic tower that drops down the cliff, enclosing a huge, circular ramp. Its purpose was to lead horses and carriages up to the hill. From the roof of the tower you have a bird’s- eye view.

Clos Luce- the last residence of Leonardo da Vinci

by Dariana

Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years of life in Amboise ,at the invitation of King Francois. In the coquettish manor ,entirely furnished , you can see aspects of his day-to-day life and the workshop of the great master. It is impossible not to be amazed by Leonardo`s genius :a collection of 40 models conceived by him and realized by IBM –maritime, hydraulic, military and mechanical inventions.
Don`t miss a walk into the Renaissance garden .

Château du Clos-Lucé: Le Parc, Part II

by von.otter

“While I thought that I was learning how to live, I have been learning how to die.”
— Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

There are several places to eat on the grounds of Château du Clos Lucé. We took lunch at L’Auberge du Prieuré. Serving Renaissance gastronomy in a 15th century priory. If you visit during the mild weather, you can take your meal under the shade of the umbrellas on the terrace. There are indoor tables in the atmospheric rooms. You too can ask the sweet, costumed waitress posed with you.

The other choices within the park include La Terrasse Renaissance, a crêperie and salon du thé; located near a watermill, La Table du Moulin is a snack bar.

Close by to our picnic table a cute little stabile (see photos #3 + #4) spun in the breeze: some modern fun with Leo and Frank, linked in history.
