One of my favorite memories at Blois was when I was with a group of friends standing around the courtyard and the clocks in the town started to chime on the hour. Soon, this noise started coming from the building across the courtyard. Then 7 or 8 golden mechanical dragon heads start popping out of the windows and music is playing. It was the weirdest site I've ever seen, the weirdest chiming clock anyway. It was definately worth the wait out in the courtyard to get in!!
On the same floor are the most interesting rooms in the wing, the apartment of Catherine de Medici. First we enter her bedroom. Note the alcove with a small throne from which she could show her authority when appropriate. Beyond is her study lined by paneling , several hundred of the panels are actually secret drawers activated by a hidden mechanism, which contained state papers (fabled to hold secret poisons). Beyond is her oratory with a fine ceiling and stained glass windows. Her portrait is among the decorations as well.
According to tradition, the assassination of the Duke de Guise occurred here in this room. The Duke de Guise would have collapsed at the foot of the King's bed after being stabbed by eight assassins who were acting on the King's orders. The Duke de Guise had in fact been planning a coup d'etat in order to take over the kingdom.
Blois was a great city to see! I went with an international group from the university I was studying at. We all have a blast. Blois is one of those cities that seems untouched by everything around it. It still has all the narrow streets, back alleyways, and small town pubs and restaurants in the centre. The castle was interesting to look at on the outside, but it was very plain on the inside. One thing that they do though, in the summer and during a few holidays, is they light up the castle with different themed lights. It's a really cool thing to see.
