Bourges to Chartres by bus?

by smeans2

I will be visiting Bourges by train from Paris and would like to proceed to Chartres without returning to Paris. There doesn't seem to be direct train service, but is it possible to make the trip by bus?

You were probably directed to the TGV website, the fast train. Its connections are limited. You need local trains.

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
Tip: do not click on the English link which will direct you to the TGV website again. Just fill out the form on the French version, then you get all the local trains.

It's a 3 hr 40 min. trip, approx. and costs 27.60 euro one-way.
No need for reservations. Just buy a ticket at the counter.

You have to change train in Orleans.
The train is your best bet.

hi Jeannette, the link you gave won't include your search results.
That's why I gave the general link to the same search form.

It is indeed very important to look at the site in French (it's easy to work out). As AT says, choosing the English translation will take you to TGV and a site which does not list all departures. I use this link:

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/horaires

which takes you straight to the timetable search page. To find fares, use the 'reservez votre billet de train' box on the right......but you don't actually need to reserve or buy your tickets online!

is a useful translation tool, should you need it.

A good explanation on how to book tickets directly from SNCF is here:

Thanks for the helpful website, KVB.
It's interesting that SNCF will mail tickets to Afghanistan or Mongolia but NOT to the US.

Thank "the man in seat 61". That website is excellent.

It always is worth keeping in mind that the builders of medieval cathedrals worked with nothing more than the simplest of tools. But they built to last. When looking out from the tower at Bourges, it's easy to imagine that the view has not changed all that much in the last half-millenium.
