I will be visiting Bourges by train from Paris and would like to proceed to Chartres without returning to Paris. There doesn't seem to be direct train service, but is it possible to make the trip by bus?
You were probably directed to the TGV website, the fast train. Its connections are limited. You need local trains.

Tip: do not click on the English link which will direct you to the TGV website again. Just fill out the form on the French version, then you get all the local trains.
It's a 3 hr 40 min. trip, approx. and costs 27.60 euro one-way.
No need for reservations. Just buy a ticket at the counter.

You have to change train in Orleans.

That's why I gave the general link to the same search form.
It is indeed very important to look at the site in French (it's easy to work out). As AT says, choosing the English translation will take you to TGV and a site which does not list all departures. I use this link:

which takes you straight to the timetable search page. To find fares, use the 'reservez votre billet de train' box on the right......but you don't actually need to reserve or buy your tickets online!

It always is worth keeping in mind that the builders of medieval cathedrals worked with nothing more than the simplest of tools. But they built to last. When looking out from the tower at Bourges, it's easy to imagine that the view has not changed all that much in the last half-millenium.
