Bijouterie (Jewellery Shop)
by Kate-Me
In Chartres I just loved the architecture of the buildings, particularly the traditional French ones, brightly painted ones, with window shutters.
I was often more interested in the shops themselves, than what was inside!
The Jambs
by Goner
The outdoor sculptures of Chartres are almost as renowned as the stained glass windows. They adorn the cathedral's exterior around the doorways. The sculptures in the photo are on the sides of the Royal Portal and are of the Apostles.

Visit a quiet garden right behind the cathedral!
by Beausoleil
If you walk around to the back of the Cathedral Notre Dame, there is an unexpected garden in the rear. Directly behind the cathedral is an amazing view over the city and clear out into the country (on a clear day). There is a small garden maze below the viewpoint and if you continue around the back of the cathedral you come to the Beaux Arts Museum and several benches under the trees.
We like to sit in the little park and do our postcards. The Beaux Arts is definitely worth a visit and there are great photo ops in the little park.
The Tympanum -- from the West or Royal Portals
by shrimp56
There are three doors that form the front entrance to Chartres. The tympanum over the central one is from the Book of Revelations -- Christ surrounded by the four beasts -- representing the Apocalypse.
.
This part of the cathedral dates to 1145-55 and survived the fire to be incorporated into the "new" church.
Chartres Has A Relic.
by Toyin
Do you know what is a relic?
According to the the pamflet they offered,..A Relic is what remains of the body of a holy person, or something which has belong to him.
When you visit this Catherale, at the Eastern end, and behind the choir, in the ambulatory, at a point 'R' in the directory you will be given,..There is a Relic. It is said to be the veil which would have wrapped Jesus at his birth.
The veil has been given to Charlemagne. It has been in the cathedrale since the 9th century, and since then, many pilgrims have come to Chartres to pray Jesus with Mary.
