Transport

by han.w

I am staying at the Auberge du Bon Laboureur in Chenonceaux at the end of this year. I will be arriving in town via train and am wondering the best way to get to the hotel from here as it seems a little out of the way.
Thanks! :)

From the train stop in Chenonceaux it is not a great distance to Auberge du Bon Laboureur. We have walked to and through the village of Chenonceaux from the château, crossing the train tracks as we went. We even considered the restaurant at this auberge for dinner.

Depending on your age, the amount of luggage you travel with, I think that any fit tourist can easily cover the distance.

Admittedly, it does look like quite the distance on a map, but believe me it is not. The town is charming. Enjoy your time there.

Are you feeling adventuresome? Take a hot air balloon ride that assembles at the château’s car park. We were over the moon during and after our ride. Here is the web site for the company that we used.

Hi. Chenonceaux is a very small village. You will have no trouble walking to your hotel. We're seniors and would do it in a heartbeat. You should be able to walk from your hotel to the Chateau Chenonceau too.

If you have lots of luggage, take a taxi, but with normal wheeled luggage, it's a comfortable walk.

indeed, it's a very short walk. 5 minutes or so. And you can walk to the wonderful castle as well! My favourite Loire chateau (because of the impressive kitchen, I admit).

Travel Tips for Chenonceau

INTRODUCTION - BRIEF HISTORY

by vinc_bilb

Introduction
Chenonceau is one of the most impressive Renaissance Chateau and certainly the most romantic in the Loire valley.
It is the private ancient memorial the most visited by France, set by several pleasure gardens, parc and a wine growing estate.
Château des Dames as recorded in the French history books, it owes a large part of its charm to women but also tor the fine quality of its collections and gardens.

Brief history (Adapted from Chenonceau web site)
It was built about 1515 and, in 1524, it became royal property and Henri II gave it to his mistress Diane de Poitiers; on his death, his widow Catherine de Medicis took it back from her rival. Diane had Philibert Delorme buid a bridge between the Chateau and the opposite bank, Catherine had the galleries built on the bridge, for her grand receptions.
The original architecture of the Château de Chenonceau reflects in the Cher river.

Original construction phase: 1513-1521 The long way in the park early the morning, with a beautiful light and to discover this masterpiece (see the photo)

Throughout the castle you can find this symbol. It consist of the H of Henry II intertwined with the C of Catherine de Medici. And combined they form the D of Diane de Poitiers. Henry II was king of France and married with Catherine de Medici. But his favorite was Diane de Poitiers. She lived at Chenonceau for several years until Catherine kicked her out basically after Henry´s dead

Chateau Chenonceaux on the Lovely River Cher

by Goner

The castle stetches over the Cher River with a 197-foot gallery built over a series of arches. Chenonceau is not only remarkable for its architecture and history but also for the fine quality of its collections as can be seen from the inside visit: Renaissance furniture, a vast ensemble of XVI th and XVII th centuries tapestries and a great number of masterpieces. Le Primatice, Rubens, Le Tintoret, Rigaud, Nattier, Van Loo are among the most famous names that can be found there.

Furniture, paintings, ceilings, tapestries and decoration are preserved, checked and restored with the greatest care. The Corrège’s painting L’Education de l’Amour , located in Catherine de Médicis’ bedroom, have recently been restored by Marc Philippe, regular restorer of the castle. The chapel's stained glass windows were destroyed by a bomb in 1944 and were replaced in 1953. A great idea is to rent a boat (to the left, in the moat, 10 FF) and there you go, in three or four strokes of the oars you're on the Cher with an unbelievable view of the building

CHATEAU DE CHENONCEAU

by Helga67

This enchanting castle may be smaller in comparison to others, but what it lacks in size it makes up in charm. This truly is a magnificent place, deeply rich with history, and is certainly one of the most romantic Châteaus in Loire Valley. Definitely "worth taking the time to visit."
