Very nice stay!!
From all the places were we slept that one was definetely the best quality price relation.
The hotel is a typical french house with a nice garden at the front, the hotel is very familiar, clean, and the staff (the owners) very friendly.
The best part of the hotel is the breakfast that tkes place in a small lounge with a chimeney, when you arrive you take place, and you have a basket full of bread, french of course, and croissants, on the table you will find around 10 or 12 different kind of jams, all home made, very special recipes, like apple and three flower jelly, vainilla and green tomatoes... Nice experience!!
More about Diderot
We had a lovely stay at the Hotel Diderot. The staff was lovely, friendly, and helpful. The room was standard. Everything is walking distance in Chinon so we enjoyed the walk to dinner or for a glass of wine. Just a reminder, there is no air conditioning. So, be prepared...if you are there when it is hot there is little relief in the rooms.
Wonderful hotel, wonderful owners, wonderful city
We spent two nights at the Hotel Diderot in March 2007. We absolutely loved our stay; Chinon is a fascinating medieval town that makes a wonderful base to visit chateaux and other attractions in the Loire valley. It is simply magical to stroll back to the hotel in the evenings after dinner – you can easily imagine yourself transported back in time. We chose this hotel on the basis of the wonderful TripAdvisor reviews – and we were not disappointed. An earlier post complaining about the breakfast must have stayed at a different hotel; the Diderot’s breakfast is fantastic. It was not included in the price of our room but, given the EXTREMELY reasonable room rates, the price for the breakfast was more than fair. Wonderful croissants and brioches, out-of-this-world homemade jams, divine apple juice (nectar), walnuts, goat cheese, yogurt, coffee made fresh as you order it, fresh fruit – what more could you want for a traditional French continental breakfast? And the breakfast room – with beautiful exposed beams, antiques, and a welcoming fire in the fireplace (it was chilly during our stay in March) – was really a wonderful place to start the day. Laurent – who hosted and served breakfast while we were there – is a wonderful host in every way. We couldn’t have asked for more.
The owners – two sisters and their brother – are natives of Chinon and had significant experience in the hospitality industry before purchasing and redecorating the hotel. They truly care about the comfort and enjoyment of their guests – and they went out of their way to make our stay memorable. We had a large, beautiful room with antiques on the second (American third) floor from the parking area. The stairs are narrow but quite manageable – particularly in light of the age of the hotel. And you are given a key to the “back” door – the door opening to the street on the first (American second) floor – in addition to your room key, so that you can return after dinner without disturbing others. We felt as though we were “at home” at the Hotel Diderot, and we would absolutely stay there again if we have the opportunity to return to France. Our stay there was one of the highlights of our trip – and we hope that Francoise, Martine, and Laurent don’t change a single thing – everything is absolutely perfect.
The “crumbling” comment in an earlier post has no connection with the Hotel Diderot, in my opinion. The oldest parts of the hotel are 14th-century, but we saw no evidence – at all – of maintenance issues. The hotel is beautifully maintained and has modern conveniences – without having sacrificed the architectural integrity of the medieval building.
Top Chinon boutique hotel
We're a family of four from England and we've recently had a
great couple of nights at Hotel Diderot in Chinon, Loire Valley. The welcome was warm and the hotel was immaculate in every way, but with a family feel.
Francoise and her parents made us all feel welcome. They can speak English happily, if required. The rooms are spacious and clean, with large windows and shutters opening over the beautiful courtyard. We took breakfast both mornings on the terrace. The speciality jams were monumental. The hotel is ideally located in the centre of the old town. There is parking for about ten cars at the hotel, or free parking nearby.
We really do recommend this hotel, either as a base for the Loire, or to stop off on the way South.

PS They also put us onto the excellent Domaine de la Noblaie nearby, where Jerome was also charming.
Our three days at The Hotel Diderot in Chinon were absolutely amazing. Francoise, Laurent, Martine and Olivier are the ultimate hosts. You feel like you are being welcomed by old friends. The ambience of the hotel is perfect. Relax and enjoy a glass of excellent local Chenin Blanc in the sunny courtyard. Enjoy a breakafast of freshly baked croissants and baguettes served with an array of Laurent's 25 varieties of homemade jam.
The hotel itself is so warm and inviting. The hosts are all experts on the town of Chinon and the sights of the Loire Valley. They will definitely point you in the right direction. I can't believe the reviewer who stated that the owners were cold. He must have been talking about another hotel, because it can't have been the owners that we met. We are going back as soon as we can get away.
We simply cannot say enough about this beautiful hotel, the hosts and the town of Chinon itself. I think this is by far the best place to stay for a tour of the Loire Valley. Chinon is such a gorgeous midieval village. It is small enough that you don't feel overwhelmed but it is also home to several amazing restaurants (one of them boasts a Michelin star).
So if you are looking for a beautiful. peaceful, welcoming place to stay in the Loire Valley, definitely call Hotel Diderot.
Great place to stay
We stayed at the Hotel Diderot as part of a bicycle tour group and loved it. The room was small but very clean, the bathroom was modern and also very clean. Other than a few cars going in and out of the parking lot, it was mostly very quiet and nothing woke us up during the night. The hotel is such a beautiful old building and the staff are very welcoming (even the cat!) Breakfast was fantastic and the old bad part was that we couldn't buy Laurent's homemade jams. We did get the cookbook but our favourite jam, rose and lavendar, wasn't in there. We'd definitely go back.
Charming hotel, charmless owner
This hotel has much to offer, most likely the best value in Chinon. Charming courtyard rooms (better than those in the main house) offering French country decoration, and clean well-prepared facilities. The breakfast room, filled with pots of home-made jams and fresh flowers, is also idyllic. And secure parking is a boon for anyone travelling heavy with luggage. The one black spot, however, is the aloof, disdainful owner - your final experience as you check out. It shouldn't matter really : but somehow it does.
The room was beautiful and the hosts were charming. My daughter and I spent one night at this hotel over the winter holidays. The room was large and well decorated with a private bathroom larger than some hotel rooms I've stayed in. Breakfast was wonderful and included a variety of homemade jams and goat cheese with honey and walnuts. I will absolutely stay there again if I return to the area. The owners were charming.
Charming and Lovely!
My wife and I stayed at the Diderot on our Honeymoon in October. Everyone at the Hotel was so nice. The room they put us in was perfect and beautiful and the price was just right! Laurent and Françoise were so helpful and accommodating. We wanted to bike over to Fontevraud to see the Abbey and they organized the bike rental for us. When we checked in, the bikes were there waiting for us.
We simply fell in love with the place. It feels not like a hotel, but more like a relative's home you're stopping at. Even the simplicity of the breakfast underscored this feeling. Unlike the UK hearty, fill your plate and eat for the whole day, inclusive breakfast, the tasty jams and breads of the Diderot breakfast make it feel like you're sitting in an aunt's kitchen, trying all the preserves she made last year.
The hotel even has an in-residence cat that came and visited us as we were packing to leave. When I opened the door to speak to the housekeeper, he boldly entered and hopped up onto my wife's lap as if to say, "So nice to meet you, sorry you have to leave."
Chinon itself is a lovely medieval village with great restaurants and nice people. We didn’t have a bad meal or bad service once in the 3 days we were there. You can’t get more picturesque than this place. It is just wonderful.
We long to return and use the Diderot as a home base to explore more of the Loire Valley. We would come back in an instant. It was our Honeymoon, so it was special anyway, but our time in Chinon really made it perfect. Thanks to all at the Diderot for everything!
