The perfect town
"Cardinal Richelieu"
As you approach Richelieu from the south (on D749), you meet the Cardinal himself in the form of a statue by the roadside.
Cardinal Richelieu planned the city of Richelieu and it still takes your breath today as you approach it. There are four perfect gates to the city. The Cardinal's chateau is long since destroyed but there is a museum on the grounds. The city is now more a village but good for a pleasant walk.
"The City Gate"
There are four of these beautiful gates. They are very impressive especially after driving through the rural countryside. We accidentally found Richelieu driving from Neuville, north of Poitiers, up to Chinon. It was a lovely discovery so we stopped and walked around the town which is arranged on a perfect grid so even I couldn't get lost. 8^)
