The river Loire of course is a focal point of activity. The golf course at Golf du Sancerrois runs along the banks of the river or you can go fishing, kayaking, walking and cycling. The islands of the Loire, at Ménétréol sous Sancerre are particularly rich in flora and fauna, perfect for the birdwatcher who may be rewarded sighting the black woodpecker and the boreal tit. During the summer the emphasis is on the great outdoors; the Canal Latéral de la Loire comes alive with canal cruisers and pleasure craft, the cafes and restaurants are geared for eating al fresco, and the markets are buzzing.
The Sancerre wine area is very old. As early as 582, written works prove that it existed.
Mainly planted with Pineau. It was destroyed by the phylloxera in the end of XIX century. The Sauvignon Blanc, especially suited for the climate, was replanted instead of the Pineau. Both the soil and the men turn it into a wine of quality which would e recognized as of 1st appellation degree in 1936. In 1959, red and Rosé wines, from Pinot Noir received in return the classification as an A.O.C
The sancerre wine area Stretches out on around 7500 acres (3000 hectares), on the left side of the Loire.

2. The (caillotes <pebbly – limestone soil), very stony and chalky.
3. The (Terres Argilo –Siliceuces ), on the hills east of the wine area.
