Bagpipes
Outside the Cathedral as we emerged , we encountered the sound of a doleful bagpipe droning away as a memorial group assembled to enter the church for a special service. (Bagpipes on solemn occasions seem to show up all over the world).

Hi there,
My boyfriend and I planning to go to France next May, and of course, we want to go to the countryside and see the Chateaux and Vineyards. We plan to use the TGV a lot, but is a car the best way to get around to each chateau we want to see? Are any of them walking distance?
Thanks, and I appreciate the feedback.

Hi Hammy - the Loire valley is exquisite - Tours is a good central location and fun little city to be based in. The Loire Valley has an exceptional network of cycling paths and free maps and directions provided by Tourist Board. I can really strongly recommend visiting interesting sites and especially all the wonderfully romantic villages by bike. If they are a bit far afield from home base, you can return by train. You can travel on most ter and corail trains with bike traveling free of charge. But you have to check which trains allow bike transport - very easy, just go to the tickets desk and ask. If you speak French, everything is just so much easier, but I have always found the SNCF staff to be very friendly and helpful (the odd exception proves the rule).
You can't take a bike on the TGV. I don't think TGV travel is advisible for this area for smaller distances anyway - only if you want to travel further, for instance to the Atlantic coast to round off your trip. But I definitely would suggest cycling - the paths extend from Tours to St. Brevins Les Pins on the coast (brilliant youth hostel there!!!). There is a homepage on this subject:www.loire-a-velo.fr/. Also check out homepage of French cycling association: http://www.fubicy.org/train/bike.html.
If you need to know more, contact me, I would be pleased to try and help.
So, hope this helps a little too. Go see Saumur at nite - wonderful.
Have a lovely trip!

Another one... & many many more.
Walk slowly, silently, look up & just marvel...
This is a cathedral... not a museum.
It's art... & it's free for all to enjoy.
It's holy... & it's all mine that rainy afternoon in Tours! :-)))
TOURS is so very beautiful... it is for the very first time Gothic-styled architecture appeals to me! I've always found Gothic to be too stark & gloomy for my taste. That was in the past. Now, I've seen the best & I'm excited & delighted :-)
Tours is special... not only because of Cathedrale St. Gathien but because it is here in Basalique St. Martin, on the very same day, that I felt & see God! The essence of GOD, HIS light & HIS melody. Do you ever felt your life is perfect at a moment in time? That you see the very meaning of your very own life? It was like that for me that day in Tours! Magnificent! Splendid! Beyond words & images...
Have you ever shed tears because you heard the most beautiful angels sing to you? Emotion swelled & when you can't find the words, you cried! It is a most beautiful experience! I have been blessed :-)))
Hallelujah!
