Please help us with our (long) LOIRE VALLEY DAYTRIP from Paris!

by bettyo70

Hi Everyone,

In June, we will be taking a long daytrip, driving from Paris to the Loire Valley, and back. We know this will be a long day, but we think we can do it!

Here is what we have so far:

1) Leave Paris early in the morning (7am?); drive directly to CHENONCEAU castle.

2) Explore Chenonceau castle and surrounding estate; have a picnic lunch on the grounds.

3) This is the part we would like input -- after Chenonceau, do we have time to either explore a trologdyte cave (Samur?), or is that too far? We don't feel the need to see another castle, so should we explore another town instead (like Amboise)? Another possibility is exporing a wine cave, such as a champagne cave in VOUVRAY.

4) We want to have dinner at L'Embarcadere -- near Blois. It is a fish restaurant where you can sit right by the river.

PLEASE HELP US WITH THE TIME BETWEEN CHENONCEAU AND DINNER IN BLOIS!

Merci beaucoup/Thanks!

Try www.mappy.fr for the time to travel between Chenonceau and Saumur.

I really would highly recommend the troglodyte caves/houses. I saw them 2 years ago and it was fascinating. The guy who gave the tour actually used to live in one of them. He was quite a character. Also there was no foreign tourists visiting the caves, just French people. I guess it's not too well-known yet. I think it's much more interesting than a Vouvray wine cave ( you can't call it Champagne, remember? lol)

Thank you, Jeanette.

I am a little worried about travel time to Saumur; someone said the roads within the Loire Valley are just two lanes, so you end up moving kind of slowly. Will investigate further...

Warm regards,
Betty (NYC)

Mappy listed Chenonceau to Saumur as 115.1 kilometers (about 72 miles) and an hour 35 minutes travel time.

The roads in the Loire are mostly two lane but they are excellent and traffic moves right along. It is a lovely place to drive. I agree with Jeannette. Do try to see the troglodyte caves. When you drive along the Loire, you'll see lots of houses, stables and storage buildings dug right into the cliffs. It's fascinating.

Certainly don't worry about the roads. They are excellent.

Hi there, Beausoleil,

Thanks for your input! Hope all is well on your side. Maybe we will check out the caves after all...

Cheers,
Betty (NYC)

Betty,
Here is a good website with photos of the troglodyte caves. It's in English as well.

Have fun planning your trip.

Jeanette,

You're a doll...thanks for the link!

By the way, have you eaten in that Saumur restaurant inside the cave "Les Caves de Mason"?

No, I have not.

We usually use the Michelin Red Guide when we want to eat in a nice restaurant. We choose the ones with only one or 2 forks and we've never been disappointed.
I hope you have a wonderful time. I am going to France at the end of this month but we're taking a short trip to Greece first.

Travel Tips for Tours

Chambord: just a “hunting lodge”!?

by tiabunna

When King Francois the 1st wanted to develop a ‘hunting lodge’, he was not interested in doing things by halves. So he had erected the simple little weekender you see here. It is believed that Leonardo Da Vinci was involved in the design of the very impressive double helix spiral staircase in photo 2. Actually, the whole place is rather impressive, with a great many fancy points of detail – especially on the roofs (photo 3). Being an excessively modest fellow, Francois also made sure that everything was heavily encrusted with his initial ‘F’ and salamanders, his personal emblem (see photo 4). Despite all that, in total Francois spent only seven weeks in this Chateau!

We visited during February of 1997, still deep in winter, when the monumental pile probably was not looking its best. Certainly it was distinctly chilly, showing that the (reported, I didn’t count them) 365 fireplaces would have been necessary for any degree of comfort. It also is worth noting that, for the most part, the 440 room building is empty of furnishings.

Enjoy Place Plumereau

by tiabunna

Place Plumerau is the main square of the ‘old town’. With tourism the main business in the district these days, it is hardly surprising that it is well served with a choice of eating and drinking opportunities. I didn’t stop here, but I rather fancy that sitting in this square with a group of friends on a sunny day, with its mediaeval buildings surrounding, would have to be very pleasant. Even wandering through was enjoyable.

If you wander westwards along rue de Commerce from the Cathedral, it is not a long walk to find yourself here. Alternatively, head up rue Nationale (the main street) from place Jean Jaurès, then left via rue du Maréchal Foch or rue de Commerce - either way, the streets in this area become fairly tangled, so it is nice just to wander and find your destination almost by luck!

Chateau De Tours

by Sharrie

Tours is the regional capital of chateaux & wineries. Well, since I planned to visit the other chateaux (& there are at least 7 of them) I skipped this one instead. This is just a photo shoot of the exterior. For remembrance.

School trip

"Loire Valley"

I was on a school trip here in '92 ,I wasn't allowed to enjoy it, since I was given all these nasty French tasks to do, force-fed warm cereal every morning plus it was really miserable weather, still it beat school.
