Travel Tips for Reims

History

Reims became...

by catnl

History

Reims became established under the name of Durocortorum, as the ancient capital of the Roman province of Belgium. The Romans were attracted by its chalk quarries, or crayères, which were used to provide building materials. Today, their special cooling properties are employed in champagne production. The Rèmes tribe, who formed an alliance with Julius Cesar, gave the town its current name. I have been at Reims i think at 1983 i forgot.....

Champagne

The Champagne region is strictly controlled by French law and beyond its borders, champagne grapes cannot be cultivated nor champagne produced. Reims and Epernay are home to many renown makes such as Mumm Cordon Rouge, Krug and Moet Chandon, as well as many small independent producers. Visitors can see some of the marvels of the champagne houses and their chalk cellars, whose cooling elements and natural moisture regulation are ideal for champagne production. Many establishments offer guided tours in a variety of languages, with a tasting session included. However some champagne houses are not open to the public, but by appointment only.

The tourist route of the wine of Champagne will lead you across the most interesting areas in the region where the Champagne wine is produced. Not only will you be able to visit the small cellars in the villages, but also you will admire the beatiful French landscape, the wineyards, the small lakes and the hills.

Cathedrale Notre Dame

by Sambawalk

Reim's world-famous Gothic Cathedrale Notre Dame began in 1211 and was centuries the traditional site of French coronations. The most famous event in the Cathedral's history was the coronation of Charles' VII - with Joan of Arc at his side on 17 July 1429. The Cathedrale is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The finest stained glass is in the western facade's 12-petalled great rose window.

Salle de Reddition

by Tom_Fields

During the last part of World War II, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, General Eisenhower, set up his headquarters here in Reims. He chose a former schoolhouse near the railroad tracks. On May 7, 1945, the German generals unconditionally surrendered to the Allies here in this room. It's now called the Salle de Reddition, or Hall of Surrender.

The room is still preserved in its original condition. One can still see the table where the surrender took place. There is also a small museum with some wartime memorabilia.

MUSEUM PAVILLION "LE VERGEUR"...

by eden_teuling

This "speciality" is situated at the Place du Forum.

This large individual house is basically an example of Renaissance Style, although it also has a 13th Century GOTHIC hall.

But first and foremost this museum is a fully functioning house, with 16 rooms on 2 floors .

It is also part of Reim's HISTORY!

It houses an exceptional collection of 14 carvings on wood, including the Apocalypse of St. John, ALBRECHT DüRER'S most famous work.

Isn't this museum a fabulous sight?? On the outside and also on the inside......so.....there you go, direction Pavillion Le Vergeur , address is below....
