Hi

Can anyone recommend a budget (50-60 eu) hotel in Reims?

You can always stay at a Campanile. It's kind of a French Motel 6. They are clean, private bath and a decent restaurant attached. Unfortunately, most are near an Autoroute so are a bit noisy.

You can do a search on VT and you can do a search at http://www.france.com for hotels in Reims. You shouldn't have any trouble. It's a lovely city with lots to do.

You can try these too. Similar to the other option

Travel Tips for Reims

visit the cathedral. If I could only have visited for thirty minutes I would have spent my time there. We sat outside at a cafe, across the street from the cathedral, munching on baguettes. It was nice and relaxing.

Take enough films

It should be better to leave your suitcase in the car or hotel ....

It can be rather chilly in May and June (late frosts)! So take a jacket and a pullover with you when getting to Reims.

Take enough films with you! If you like photography as I do, you will find a lot photograph there. Believe me!

And at least, "pack" some time when going to Reims ...
:-))

Epernay, is the real capital...

by shiran_d

Epernay, is the real capital of champagne, the drink.

Here, 115km (72 miles) of underground galleries in the chalk beneath the city store the wine for the delicate operations required to make champagne.

These include the blending of vintages, one of the most important tasks in the creation of champagne. It is left to age for at least three years.

Aside from champagne as the world knows it, there is an excellent blanc de blanc champagne nature, an unbubbly white wine with a slight bite and many of the characteristics of champagne.

Mumm Champagne house

We both had the grande tour (same tour 3 tastings) I think it was around $18 euro. The tour of the caves interesting and you did get to see a lot, the guide was very knowledgable and we saw all the caves and different ways they store and turn the champagne, this was a walking tour so you do have to walk down several flights of stairs and then around the caves at a slow pace, (very easy). you also get to take a elevator back up at the end. The tasting room is like a wine bar and is nice, there is also a gift shop that sells wine right next to the tasting area. The tour was nice but our tour in Eperney at Castellane was a little better.

Place du Forum & le Cryptoportique Gallo-Romain

by MM212

What was once the Roman Forum of Durocortorum (Roman Reims), remained a square full of commercial activity to the present day. Below ground level at the centre of the square is an archaeological site, le Cryptoportique Gallo-Romain, consisting of a 3rd century AD arched gallery that served as a granary during Gallo-Roman times. It is one of a few vestiges remaining from the Gallo-Roman period. The Cryptoportique is open to the public, but only in summer months, and has a small exhibit of objects found on site. Unfortunately, when I visited in November 2010, it was closed for the season.
