Smiling Angel: The cathedral...

by aliante1981

Smiling Angel: The cathedral is justly famous for many statues. The most beautiful of them is considered to be the statue of the so-called 'Smiling Angel', situated near the left entrance (if you stand facing the Cathedral).

Notre-Dame de Reims

by Dabs

Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Reims) was built between 1211 and 1275 on the alleged site of the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi in AD496. This cathedral is where the kings of France were crowned.

The Germans bombed the cathedral in 1917 during WWI, it sustained major damage, restoration was funded in part with grants from the Rockefeller family.

My favorite part of the cathedral are the beautiful striking blue stained glass windows by Russian artist Marc Chagall who was commissioned to create them in the early 1970s. One of the windows depicts the principal events in the lives of Abraham and Christ, another window shows the tree of Jesse, the lineage of the Kings of Judah, and the third window shows momentous events in the lives of the Kings of France including the coronation of King Charles VII in front of Joan of Arc and the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi.

Open from 7:30-19:30 every day

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

PALAIS DU TAU.....

by eden_teuling

This Palace is located next to the Cathedral, which really is the very cor of the city.

It is the former palace of the ASrchbishop of Reims, rebuilt under King LKouis XIV by Robert de Cotte.
It has retained its palatial 13th Century chapel and the Gothic great Hall of Tau.

It was here that the FRENCH KINGS celebrated their coronations with abundant festivities, banquets....
It is a pity that the hall where these feasts too place was terribly damaged during the many wars of the last Centuries.

In this Palace are numerous statues, valuables, tapestries, sacramental gold & silver and sculptures from the Cathedral, relics and the coronation regalia dating from the coronation of KAREL X , CHARLES X.
This museum now also has a special CORONATION MUSEUM.

In between the CATHEDRAL and the Palais du Tau is the double-chapel which still has kept safe lots of its 13th Century beauty!

Place Drouet-d'Erlon

by MM212

The most animated part of Reims, Place Drouet-d'Erlon is the cultural heart of the city. Although referred to as a square ("place"), it is in fact a long, tree-lined, pedestrianised avenue with boutiques, restaurants, cafés and cinemas located in the Belle Époque buildings along its sides. It is named after Jean-Baptiste Drouet, le comte d'Erlon, a military figure under Napoleon, born in Reims in 1765. At the southern end of the avenue is la fontaine Subé, a fountain erected in 1903, with beautiful sculptures representing personifications of the four major rivers that run through the Champagne-Ardennes region. A gilded statue of a winged Victory is mounted over a column that crowns the fountain. When I visited in November 2010, the entire avenue was getting ready to host a charming-looking Christmas market (see attached photos).
