This was a stopover place after a very long flight from Los Angeles to Paris. We picked up our leased Peugeot 206 and hit the road. By the time we were on the N4 halfway to Strasbourg, we were tired and ready to stop for the night.
Le Champenois is on the edge of a very small town and was perfect for our purposes. It is cute, quaint, very French, has an excellent restaurant and the town is great for a nice long walk after sitting for over 24 hours.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and that was all we asked. The restaurant was excellent and the proprietor was very sympathetic. We highly recommend their vegetable soup.
There are enough tourist sights nearby that you could spend several days or a week there, but we were on our way to Barr, near Strasbourg, and then on into Bavaria.
I'm not sure there is anything particularly unique about Le Champenois. It is a small, very quiet, pleasant hotel-restaurant with a very friendly staff. It would be good as a stopover or for a quiet country vacation, particularly for bicyclists or walkers.
"Just 15km from "Le Grand Der", the largest man-made lake in Europe (4800ha). 15km from the Champagne vineyards, ideal for visits and tasting. Discover the half-timbered buildings so typical of the region."
Le Champenoise is no longer a member of Logis de France and they don't have a web site. You can make phone reservations and there is a village web site that is in English. They have English speakers on staff but if you are more comfortable, Fax them instead.
