Many stories exist about the famous Lion. It is said to be hollow and a subway starting from its entrails may connect it to the castle.
Another rumor said that Bartholdi, who died on 5 October 1904, would have committed suicide because he had forgot to sculptur the lion's tongue. This is clearly false, since the sculptor died much after the statue was built; moreover, the lion's posture doesn't let you see its tongue!
This photo comes from a scanned slide taken in 1993, which explains why it is a bit spoilt. My mother and I are in the yellow part...
