See the arc of victory in besançon-La Porte Noire. This was a symbol of victory and it was constructed by the romans in the 2nd Century. La prte noire est une symbol de la victoire qui a été construit par les Romains du 2ème siècle:)
Besançon is known for its many hidden stairways. The one on the picture is located on Grande Rue, just after Place du Huit Semptembre on the left side.
Anyway, they are hard to find because from the outside you see just an ordinary door. Even natives might not know where they can be found. A good guide is of help!
Another one we visited was in the Northern corner of Place Victor Hugo.
The castle at the bottom of which can be found the Lion de Belfort, symbol of the city resistance in 1870-1871 which commemorates the 104-day siege of the Franco-German War; it was sculptured by Bartholdi. It is roughly 22 meters long by 11 meters high.

Surrounded by the dark, wooded hills of the Jura, Besancon is the capital of the Franche-Comte region. Since the 18th centurey Besancon has been noted as a clock making centre.
Besancon has very few visitors, is very clean and green and is dubbed one of the most "liveable" cities in Fracnce.
Besancon is located in Franche-Compte region of France which is close to Switzerland region.Besancon is chosen as miss green of France.Besancon is a really beautiful town.I think everybody has to visit there.
