Travel Tips for Les Andelys

Les Andelys

by Beausoleil

"If you are visiting Giverny, visit Les Andelys too"

Driving from Giverny on D313 back to Connelles we spotted this marvelous view. Who could resist? We stopped at a friendly tourist office on the road and were given directions to Chateau Gaillard. The lady told us it was closed on Tuesdays but we were free to walk around the property so we drove up and parked.

We did walk around as much of the ruined chateau as was open and then enjoyed the magnificent views of the Seine from the Chateau.

Glorious!

This is an old photo but we've never had a more beautiful day to take pictures so I treasure this one.

"Glorious views from the ruined chateau"

There is not a bad view in any direction. You can overlook fertile fields and you can watch boats going along the Seine.

"This door would certainly discourage invaders!"

This fortress was finally breached but by treachery from within. It is a formidable building even in ruin.

Les Andelys - town of the famous Chateau Gaillard

"Last stop of this day: Chateau Gaillard"

Arriving in Les Andelys, we were proud of what we have done that day. We managed to visit all spots east of Rouen we wanted without any hurry. So we also took some time to rest short before arriving in Les Andelys, took a small break before we approached Chateau Gaillard. Unfortunately, we managed to arrived two minutes after closure. Anyway, we had a nice view on the river Seine after a quite eventful day.

A Lovely Little Village in a Beautiful Setting

by aussiedoug

Our group from the Art
Gallery Society of New South Wales (see my Paris page) had lunch and a look around this lovely little village after our visit to Giverny and Jardien de Monet. Despite the weather being tres ordinaire with overcast conditions and the occasional drop of rain we all enjoyed this place. Was it the lovely lunch with a couple of glasses of good quality vin blanc that prepared us so well to appreciate this village or was it the village itself? A rhetorical question!

After a delightful lunch a the Hotel Normandie (see Restaurant tip when I get it done) we had a stroll around the streets of la petit Andelys. I dropped in a had a brief chat with a local artist. Unfortunately I can't remember his name. His English was probably equally as bad as my French, but we both thoroughly enjoyed conversing.
The photo here shows typical housefronts in the village. Our tourleader (you will see his photo in my restaurant tip) told us that this style originated in the Normandy region and was (I think from memory) taken to Britain either with or after the Norman Invasion. The world now refers to it as "Tudor". If anyone knows anything more specific in regard to this I would love to hear from you.

Miscellaneous Memories/ Photos Lovely Les Andelys

by aussiedoug

"Magnificent Church of Les Andelys"

Was so impressed with this church seeing as the village wasn't overly huge. Definitely worthy of a photo, or two. So the next one will be a close up of, which is it, the 'spire', or the 'steeple'?

"Another Question for my Fellow VTers"

And who can answer it? Please help me if you can. I would like to be able to put up correct information.

All the same I think this is a very good photo. Quite an impressive church and thought this was worth a close up from the Nikon

"From Richard the Lionheart ruins"

A lovely different perspective of the church particularly framed by the village, la Seine and lovely foliage in both foreground and background.

"Turn left out of Hotel Normandie & here you are"

You can just see the top of the church in the top right hand corner.

Also you can see the "Tudor" style on the front of the houses on the right hand side of the street.

I wonder how different things would have looked on a sunny day rather than the weather we had. Nevertheless I thought it was a lovely village, very photogenic
