London to Rouen

by stevenjh

I'm leaving on a cruise from Rouen on Monday, July 19th. However, my flight from the US gets into London (Gatwick) on Saturday morning,. Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to get from London to Rouen?

I'm not familiar with the areas, but there is an overnight ferry from Portsmouth that goes to Le Havre. Would it be difficult to get from Le Havre to Rouen? Or would it be easier to take a train from London to Paris and then connect to Rouen?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

First of all, wellcome to VT..... It is easier to connect a train from waterloo in London to Paris and then connect to Rouen from Gare du Nord (Paris). I was in the town a month ago, and it is exactly 126kilometers from Paris by road. Its fun to drive. However, it is faster by train.

How about flying to Paris (Charles de Gaulle), then getting a train ? If you use a ferry you'll probably be leaving too little time to get your Rouen connection (Gatwick -> London (train) -> Portsmouth (train) -> Le Havre (ferry) -> ...)

Have you checked that your Portsmouth ferry does not go to Rouen ? Most do Portsmouth-Le Havre-Rouen.

Otherwise, you can either have a train (one hour) or a bus
For the train, you will have to take a taxi to the station (8 euros) or a shuttle (2 euros). The train ticket is 11.60 euros.

Of course, much depends of the exact times of your arrival in Gattwick and Portsmouth and of you departure from Rouen, but at first sight, your idea of going through Portsmouth seems more sensible than doing a large detour by Paris.

I think that the best bet would be to use the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry. It's a shorter crossing than the Portsmouth route and Dieppe, like Le Havre, has regular rail services to Rouen.

The rail journey from Gatwick to Newhaven takes less than 1 hour (one change) and the station in Newhaven is very close to the ferry terminal. British rail services being as they are, a prudent man would tackle this on the Saturday rather than the Sunday, but there is an hourly service on Sundays.

The ferry companies running the Newhaven route are:
Hoverspeed (www.hoverspeed.com) and
Transmanche (www.transmancheferries.com)

Good luck with the journey.

Newhaven to Dieppe ferry seems a very good idea. There are very often trains from Dieppe to Rouen and it will take from 40 minutes to one hour. Time tables on :

Travel Tips for Rouen

Église Saint Maclou, nailed by the carpenter ?

by JLBG

Among the carvings on one of the doors of the left portal on the front of the Église Saint Maclou, this one represents a maid (a virgin or the Virgin ?). If you click to enlarge it, you will better see that the carpenter who made the door has without any doubt, nailed her.

The foundations, remaining of the old church

by JLBG

The foundations of the old church that was on the Place du Vieux Marché at the time of Jeanne d'Arc have been kept. The church was destroyed as a collateral damage of D day. A new church has been built in a modern style (see next tip).

Aître Saint-Maclou, now for fine arts

by JLBG

Once you enter the "Aître Saint Maclou", you find a large and peaceful square, surrounded by two levels old half-timbered houses that host now the School for fine arts. The students in fine arts are living there and are working there. They are really lucky as it is so peaceful.

Palace of Justice, the courthouse of Normandy

by Pavlik_NL

Rouen is the capitol of Normandy (departments Basse- and Haute Normandy) and therefore is also the centre of jurisdiction. The legal powers are here in the Palace of Justice, the higher court of Normandy. The building is again constructed in a beautiful gothic style with fine ornaments, decorations, statues, shapes and forms. However, the building is rather stuffed in between many other buildings and therefor doesn't completely come to it's right in scenic views.

Step inside the cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen

by Pavlik_NL

In the former Tip I showed the outside, but the inside of this catehdral is a true domain of God. When you stand in the middle of the ship, the space around you is overwhelming. The height of the roof makes your head spin and the lights fall in beautifully from all the windows around you. Some of them are stained windows that are extremely colourful and representing parts of the bible, as well as historical events of Normandy. Many statues, paintings and other decorations make you want to walk around several hours in the Notre-Dame de Rouen. The church holds a treasury and a small museum, but in my next Tip I will especially emphasis the old graves in the church.
