Église Saint Maclou, nailed by the carpenter ?
by JLBG
Among the carvings on one of the doors of the left portal on the front of the Église Saint Maclou, this one represents a maid (a virgin or the Virgin ?). If you click to enlarge it, you will better see that the carpenter who made the door has without any doubt, nailed her.
The foundations, remaining of the old church
by JLBG
The foundations of the old church that was on the Place du Vieux Marché at the time of Jeanne d'Arc have been kept. The church was destroyed as a collateral damage of D day. A new church has been built in a modern style (see next tip).
Aître Saint-Maclou, now for fine arts
by JLBG
Once you enter the "Aître Saint Maclou", you find a large and peaceful square, surrounded by two levels old half-timbered houses that host now the School for fine arts. The students in fine arts are living there and are working there. They are really lucky as it is so peaceful.
Palace of Justice, the courthouse of Normandy
by Pavlik_NL
Rouen is the capitol of Normandy (departments Basse- and Haute Normandy) and therefore is also the centre of jurisdiction. The legal powers are here in the Palace of Justice, the higher court of Normandy. The building is again constructed in a beautiful gothic style with fine ornaments, decorations, statues, shapes and forms. However, the building is rather stuffed in between many other buildings and therefor doesn't completely come to it's right in scenic views.
Step inside the cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen
by Pavlik_NL
In the former Tip I showed the outside, but the inside of this catehdral is a true domain of God. When you stand in the middle of the ship, the space around you is overwhelming. The height of the roof makes your head spin and the lights fall in beautifully from all the windows around you. Some of them are stained windows that are extremely colourful and representing parts of the bible, as well as historical events of Normandy. Many statues, paintings and other decorations make you want to walk around several hours in the Notre-Dame de Rouen. The church holds a treasury and a small museum, but in my next Tip I will especially emphasis the old graves in the church.
