3months Accommodation Rouen Area

by swater

Hi, I want to spend approx 3 months not too far from Paris, but in a place which is a hub so that travel in all directions is easy. Rouen sounds maybe perfect.
I won't have a car, preferring to use public transport.
Anyone know about self-contained accommodation for that period of time. Not too expensive.
Thanks
Sue

Rouen is not a bad choice as it has rail lines radiating in all directions.

The regional railway website is here

http://www.ter-sncf.com/haute_normandie/carte_horaires/index.asp

and I am sure you have found the links to the city and regional buses at

http://www.rouen.fr/transport/commun

I can't help with accommodation as it is a while since I have been there, but as a University city I would imagine there are good possibilities.

Travel Tips for Rouen

Old Town Rouen Is Full of Old Houses

by hquittner

In almost any street in the old town one can find half-timbered houses and in some places besides the main street (r. de l' Horloge) a whole series of them especially in the squares (like the Vieux Marche). In the most active areas they may contain fine shops at the ground level (as they did centuries ago). However around the corner from our hotel at the edge of the old town we encountered this old building with a simple fruit and vegetable store at the ground level where we obtained our late evening snacks.

Near rue Martainville, side of saint Maclou

by JLBG

Near rue Martainville, by the side of saint Maclou, close to a traditional half-timbered house painted in black a house that should have been built at the turn of the 19th century is trying to look different and smart, by alternate use of red and of white bricks.

Ancient and modern

by JLBG

As Rouen has been heavily hit by collateral dammages to Dday, many houses and buildings have been partly or completely destroyed. Some of the most important one have been rebuilt, but others have been relaced by modern buildings. This is why, as on this picture, you can see on one side of the street a very ancient building, here the back of the Palais de justice and on the other side very modern buildings. This is a contrast that can be met often in Rouen.

The Place Verdel Is Easy to Walk By

by hquittner

The Place Verdel is a green space in the heart of Rouen next to the rue Thiers and before the Musee de Beax-Arts. It is actually a small park occupying two square blocks with walks shade trees, benches a playground and a pond with ducks fronting the large museum. Also before the Museum is a statue of Rollo the Norman who planned Rouen. It is a fine place to stop and rest tired feet or plan an attack on the museum. We consider it "off the path" because it is easy to walk by it instead of through it as you go by to adjacent sites. Go in even if you are not going to the museum.

La Petite Auberge

by JLBG about FRENCH - LOCAL

We had only time for 2 dinners in Rouen, so we could not check every restaurant. La Petite Auberge has a very good reputation. We met with several friends who were very happy with their food. It is not very different from "Auberge Saint Maclou", which is 50 m further.
