You’re on a road trip. It’s late in the afternoon as you approach a major regional centre that you have in your sights. A quick look in the Solo Orbiter Guide reveals 3 or 4 budget Hotels 50 to 80 euro per night centrally located down the road from the railway station. You drive through the roundabout on the edge of town and head into the late afternoon peak traffic to find a bed for the night. Ooops the one way street! Ooops there are no parking spots. It is very French to double park. Oooops they are tooting horns at me. Oooops madam returns. …the rooms are daggy…no private facilities. To the next one on the list. Yeh gads is that the mafia hang-out next door? Ooooops doubleparked again. Etc etc. Does that sound familiar to you? We gave up years ago on the centrally located ye old-worldy hotels with "atmosphere" listed in Dick’s or Whoever’s Guides. We usually don’t go past the roundabout on the edge of town because often there is a chain Motel/Hotel located there. The chain offers clean comfortable accommodation of a ‘known’ reasonable standard with plenty of car parking space. Most have tea/coffee making facilities, some with refrigerator/mini bar. A restaurant offering moderately priced meals is usually attached. We noted in mid 2008 that the standard of meals at these restaurants has improved from previous visits. Can't complain about that! Big towns may feature more than one hotel from the same chain. Perhaps one across the road from the railway station. Depending on your priorities and whether you have a vehicle these may suit your purpose better than the motel in the industrial area on the edge of town.
Well not quite unique! We have used Ibis Hotels on numerous occasions and I don’t hesitate to recommend them. With the threat of transport strikes looming, twice we have curtailed staying in central Paris & overnighted at Ibis at CDG to ensure we would check in at the right time for flights home. We have stayed at Ibis Amboise, Dijon, Auxerre, Montargis, Nemours, Nevers and Melun (even Heathrow). The other chain with hundreds of hotels/motels throughout Europe is Campanile. We have used Campanile a dozen or so times with stops at Epernay (Dizy), Chateau Thierry, Amiens in recent years. Roanne and Saumur in 2008. The other chain we have used is Logis de France. Logis tend to be family owned and run with reasonable accommodation and an emphasis on the restaurant side of the business. Our most recent stay in a Logis was at Dole & last year we ate twice at the Logis in Montbard and again in 2008,L'Ecu & highly recommend the dining experience. Can also recommend dining at Le Villon (Morgon) & Hotel des Lys (Roanne). Of course, at the first place we stop, we pick up the book listing all places in the chain. Makes it easy to pick a town in which to stay the night if one has 3 or 4 guides - one from each chain. Well, there is nothing much to say about this hotel, it's really basic .. the rooms are a bit small , but it has a bath tub, a TV , and a minibar . So if you are looking for something cheap and basic just for crashing in then its a good place . The Hotel is located beside the 'Alma Marceau' metro station (walking distance) ,that is a stop away from the 'franklin roosevellt' metro station .
the best thing about it, is that its REALLY Close to Tour Eiffel, if you walk to the intersection at the beginning of the street it will be very clear to see it. There is a nice supermarket at the backstreet of the hotel as well as a Very good Cheese shop. This is rather a romantic place, located right below "La Cité" - the old fortified town completely surrounded by a massive wall, and innumerous towers - where every tourist heads to. The rooms (nearly 30) of this small hotel are not modern but neat and clean, and still quite nice with the exposed beams. Many rooms have a view to "La Cité" which is just a short stroll from the hotel, and also from the terrace you can see this most magnificent site and dream of living in a castle... ;-) A room with such a nice view costs just 1 Euro more than another room, so ask for one! The rates are reasonable, a double room costs from 60 (Sep-Apr) to 79 Euro (summer and Easter), the so called "Lovers Room" is 5 Euro more. Charges for garage and pets. If you want airconditioning in the shoulder season it costs 10 Euro extra, in summer it is included. If available, I recommend to accept the extra cost for a garage as parking around the hotel is charged and limited, and the street is narrow. The hotel reception as friendly and helpful. Her explaination is clear. The room is spacious for the money we paid to stay in Paris. There is a coffee machine at the reception and a small garden area. Easy to locate as well.
Great area....direct metro line to Opera and La Fayette. Right at the metro station there is a pastry shop...0.46 EURO for half french roll and less than 1 EURO for a croissant and it's delicious. There is a shop on the way to this hotel..Leader Price...we shop frequent here. We stayed at this hotel in the apartment for 5 nights. It was a lovely house, the hostest was charming and breakfast was INCREDIBLE and the best I've every had in a B&B. Florence cooked apple crumble one morning, pancakes the next, baked apples, some sort of egg thing, all tasty, all hot. There was also French yoghurt, bread, confiture and jams, fruit, coffee orange juice, and cake. Our rooms were very grand, clean and had interesting features. The bedroom was via a hidden door off the living room, and the loo was in the turret. The only downside was that it was cold, and because it was September the heating wasn't on. The apartment has a small bathroom heater though so we took this into the bedroom and made a snug den for ourselves. The road was a little noisy on the Saturday night but there were outside shutters and that helped.

The place is clean and very nice. There is a pool and usable if the weather is warm. The rooms themselves are large with full bathrooms. The beds are comfortable. The breakfast was the usual continental but very good.
Very quiet great location. Within a few minutes of many chateaux. The owners are very helpful and have a lot of knowledge about many of the local sites. This is one of those little delightful places so typical for France. It has kept the charm of a time gone by, all eight rooms are individually furnished with massive beds, and wallpapers of yesteryear. I felt a bit like a queen ;-) As usual the bed was a bit too soft but the room had a very cosy feel, and the bathroom was ok. The restaurant serves very nice meals, all the Burgundy specialities like snails and frog's legs (but also more substantial meals LOL), accompanied by the great wines of the region. The milk and coffee for breakfast came in silverware. The hosts were very nice, friendly and relaxed. The hotel (which also has a nice terrace and garden) is located outside the town and just about 2km from the lake, on the street to Gourdon (D 980), so rather quiet. No way you could walk to the town centre at night, I estimate the distance would be about 5km. Rate (2007) from 42 to 50 EUR. Now, some years later, I can admit that I made the mistake with the reservation at this grotty hotel in Narbonne... A mistake which led me directly to this wonderful place right on the beach :-) I am very pleased about my own and all the other people's stupidity who did not get aware that my reservation had been for the month prior to my arrival LOL I made a reservation on a hotel reservation site on the internet and only corrected the day of arrival but not the month. So sure, when I arrived in Narbonne there was no room for me. In the first moment I was a little desperate because during the Tour de France it is nearly impossible to find a room after the arrival in a small town like Narbonne. But as the reception thought they had made a mistake - and nobody was able to discover the wrong month on my print - they tried to make room rearrangements. In the meantime the cycling team Gerolsteiner who stayed there had told me about the horrible small and hot rooms, not to speak of the noise from the road, so I said if they knew another place where I could stay I would go there, no problem LOL And I added: I do not have to stay in town, a hotel by the sea would be ok for me LOL First they said, oh dear, you will not believe that you can find a room there at this time of the year. So I suggested they should just make one call to find it out... And voilà: To even their own surprise the Hôtel Le Floride in Gruissan had a vacancy! And gone I was - although I nearly did not get the car out of the garage that was as crowded as the hotel ;-) I had to drive to nearly the end of the world, to the end of a road on the beach. And there it sits: really in the sand, like a simple sand-castle. You step out of the hotel and you stand on the endless beach. I spent one of the quietest nights of my life in this hotel. Obviously the upstairs rooms have more comfort but I did not mind my basic ground floor room. It was just so peaceful. And I had a wonderful late meal on the beach terrace. I got up early and went jogging on the beach before breakfast and wrote my first story on the terrace before heading back into the real (and stressful) world of the Tour de France. I had planned to travel back home after the stages in the Pyrenees and on the way back spend another night in the Hôtel Le Floride. But it was the year 2003, and Jan Ullrich was close to beating Lance Armstrong, so I had to follow the Tour until the end, which meant: Paris in the north instead of "Florida" in the south. And so I could never go back, as I moved to New Zealand soon after. But I will never forget this wonderful and peaceful place. If ever I have the chance to travel to this region again I will be back :-) The hotel is only open from Easter (April) until 15 October. Rates (as 2007): 55/60 EUR. Rooms available for up to five people (90 EUR). They also offer half-board (20 EUR).
