I have stayed at this hotel three or four times, less for its rooms (they are ok but not extraordinary) but for its great location. And BTW, it is connected to the Hôtel Royal from lounge to lounge. The hotel - itself in an historic building with matching furniture - is located at a street corner between Place Tourny and Place des Quinconces in the heart of a protected historic area of the 18th century, near the Grand Théâtre and the banks of the Garonne river. It is just some steps to little streets where you find nothing but great little (seafood) restaurants at very affordable prices because the competition is so high. It might be difficult at times to find a carpark near the hotel but somehow we always succeeded. If you do not there is an underground carpark not too far away. Rates for a double room (as 2007) from 60 to 75 EUR. Update Sept. 2008 I have just tried the hotel link in my tip and it does not work, for whatever reason. If you google the hotel you get to exactly the same link and it works... So... just try it this way, please, if you encounter problems.

Logis de France in southwestern France by Beausoleil, 2 more photos France does not have to be expensive. For hotels, try regional ones instead of international brand names. We use the Logis de France chain of small family-owned hotels. They come in all price ranges and are clean, comfortable and friendly. http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/ If you can base yourself somewhere for a week, Gites de France are rental apartments or small houses in rural areas and small towns that are often incredibly cheap. http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites You don't have to eat in expensive restaurants. Have a typical French breakfast of croissant and coffee at a small cafe, eat dinner at noon when it's cheaper and have bread, cheese and fruit for dinner in the evening. Bakeries and pastry shops have take-out style foods that are excellent and inexpensive and supermarkets have deli sections that are cheap and good. Stay away from major tourist areas because they tend to be more expensive. If you are in a tourist area, walk a few blocks from the main attraction and prices will go down. Contact the local tourist bureau and ask for help finding budget food and lodging. They know where to send you.
There is no place to put budget tips so this seemed to be a reasonable match. Everyone says they want to avoid tourists and meet the locals, so here are a couple tips to do just that . . . and save quite a bit of money in the process. The Logis de France also have excellent restaurants. However, the meals can cost more than the rooms. We have our main meal there if we're there in time for lunch but not in the evening at higher prices. Food will be good but you pay for what you get . . . to paraphrase. Gites de France are rental units and you have the option of doing your own cooking and that saves a lot of money if you don't mind cooking. We usually do cold cereal in the morning and bread, cheese, fruit and wine in the evening. We eat out at noon because we're usually touring someplace far from the house. On Rue de Belfort is this little 2star Hotel/Hostel. Was all we needed as we were only in the room to sleep :) Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable!!! Breakfast was basic but good (the best hot chocolate!) and yummy croissant and crunchy bread roll. We booked it on www.hostelbookers.com so it was a good price.

We had a nice stay. The rooms were clean, with tea/coffee making facilities. There was a tea making machine in the lobby, and a dining area where breakfast was served (optional) The area was not great we were advised to take care. The Hotel was convenient to the train and we were able to see the main sights of Paris. Unfortunately the flee market was closed the day we tried to visit it. Bordeaux take the tram which is cheap lets u on and off. contact atypic (VTer) who might show u around. Nice is expensive for both food and accomodation although I found Hotel Ibis a bargain if you book in advance. With Nice u need to go to the seafront and people watch. Free and entertaining. Lyon is a BIG city. Suggest u research other VTers site on that. I never had a problem in France when I was a young woman. You will get appreciated and even approached. Just say NON lol. You can look up Hotel Logis or Hotel Ibis in each town. They have a certain standard dictated by the French Tourisme Board. Everything is clean and well regulated. If you want REALLY cheap go to Formule 1 where you share a shower and it is flushed after each visit, rooms are 25 euros. You find them in the Zone Industrielle near each town. Also search for Hotel Balladins online you can get good deals there.

We stayed in the CIARUS youth hostel, for a youth hostel it was very clean and well maintained. We had a 3 bed room, 2 lower and 1 bunk! The second time we had 2 bunks! The breakfast was continental and consisted of Criossants etc. The evening meal was different every night, with a choice of pasta, pizza, chicken and veg.
Its got a bar, an information area, restaurant, gardens and a conference room (with TV) and down stairs in the basement there are pool tables, table tennis and a selection of arcade games.
