This is a 3 star accommodation of good standard next to the Gave river. It has 60 rooms and a private carpark. Rates for a double room are from 51 to 77 EUR. Good value for money.

I have stayed many times in Lourdes during the Tour de France. As only Paris has more hotels, you would nearly always find a room there at nearly any time of the year in this town of the pilgrims and miracles. This is my extra tip: If you do not find accommodation in the smaller towns and villages in the Pyrenees book a room in Lourdes. The location is so central and strategically perfect that you can reach many places in the mountains from there. The Saint François d'Assise is one of the super cheap hotels along the river Gave in Lourdes. When I stayed there I changed room because something was broken in the bathroom. The room was basic but ok. In such hotels the most important thing is that it is clean. Although you pay only from 26 to 28 EUR (2007) for a double room you can expect more than in other towns in France at a comparable price - if you ever find a room at this rate. There is so much competition and such an incredible quantity of pilgrims/tourists that they can offer such rates. Anyway: The other hotels I have stayed at in Lourdes were of higher standard although one of them - opposite the Saint François d'Assise - was hard to bear as there were more rolling beds and wheelchairs in every corner than you can imagine, all waiting for sick and poor people who were praying for a miracle. If you have not seen this business with the hope you would think you are watching a surreal film.

This hotel was a rather basic accommodation when I stayed there the last time but it has been totally renovated and now shines brillantly since 2004. On the photos on the internet I nearly did not recognise it, so polished it already looked from the outside. Unfortunately the spectacular transformation of this 19th century building did not only raise the street appeal of this once romantic old gem but also the rates of the 22 rooms. They are now (2007) at 110 EUR for a single/double/twin room. Before the renovation you probably paid a third of this. But of course, it looks much nicer now. I had stayed there many times, even when I did not have to travel on a certain budget for my employer. I liked it because it was not totally in the city centre, and so not noisy, but because of its great location at the edge of the city centre and only a ten minutes walk to the restaurants at the square next to the castle and the Boulevard des Pyrénées. So you could leave the car on the private carpark in front of the hotel and have a glass of wine or two for dinner without risking drink-driving, and the walk is through safe streets. And you sleep so much better in this quiet location than in the city centre, and do not have to worry about where to park your car.

This is a neat little hotel, just a short stroll from the historic and busy town centre. I do not remember a real lot about this stay but the hotel was tidy and cosy, had a terrace, and a bar was next door. The hosts were friendly and made us feel at home. I would definitely stay there again. The rate for a double/twin room (as 2007) is 58 EUR. Saintes is a good strategic location on the Atlantic coast, on the way from Bordeaux which is about 100 km south to Nantes.

This is one of the hotels I have stayed at many occasions, I even got Christmas cards for many years ;-) I stayed there many times when covering the Tour de France, working day and night. As Canet-en-Roussillon is so close to Perpignan I always stayed there for relaxation close to the beach after all those long days with the Tour. You know, just breathe the salty sea air and have a nice seafood meal on the promenade with view over the sea. Although it is no super flash accommodation the owners and staff were always so super friendly, the rates very affordable, and the location fabulous. It is just 50 metres from the beach, in a quiet street. It has a heated swimming pool and a bar/café, table tennis, a TV room and private parking. Rates (as 2007) from 44 to 68 EUR.

This hotel is a beautiful place in the heart of the old town, just some steps from the famous Hospices and Notre-Dame Basilica. Although it is a former 16th century residence it has all modern features you can expect of a good quality hotel. All rooms are different, the furniture and decoration is very much in the historic style, and very well looked after. Everywhere you see exposed beams, and a lot of beautiful woodwork, also an open stone fire place in the lounge. I would clearly rate it higher than the 3 stars it has got, compared to other places I have been to. Browse the "Rooms" link on their website and you will understand what I mean. Rates (as 2007): Double room 95 EUR Deluxe room 145 EUR Family room 169 EUR Special offers on the internet.

I did not stay for the night in this hotel but had a meal and coffee there, had a look at one of the beautiful rooms - and got to know the snobistic attitude of the owner who gave you the feeling that he thought of himself being a more valuable member of society, defined by the fact that he owned this wonderful place for the rich and being rich himself. So when I was there with several people to see some cycling pros during the Tour de France the guy permanently ran around us and controlled that we and/or our small backpacks did not touch the walls of his precious wallpaper... Probably you only stay there when you are appropriately dressed and a smile is the only thing you carry through the historic hallways, so you cannot scratch anything ;-) The house itself is delightful: a 18th century manor house in Provence, with swimming pool, tennis court, conference facilities and a beautiful garden with lots of roses. It is located at the foot of the castle of Grignan. Although it is not a castle itself it is member of the Castle Hotel association of France and offers 4 star accommodation. Rates (as 2007) from 190 Euro for a standard room to 380 Euro for a suite during the peak season, and from 152 to 304 Euro during the shoulder season. Breakfast 20 Euro... As I have not been there for several years and moved to the other end of the world I cannot give you the up-to-date information about the owners but I am rather sure this hotel has new owners as Monsieur and Madame Sémiond were not the youngest then and could well have retired in the meantime. But this hotel in Europe's highest city is still mentioned as a culinary destination on the internet, so I am sure that you can still have a nice stay and enjoy a decent meal there. To me this hotel has always been my first port of call in this alpine area since my first stay there during a Tour de France. The owner, André Sémiond, was such a lovely host, a real gentleman of the old school, who made me go back again and again. A real "patron", as the French call the boss. Also the US Postal team including Lance Armstrong loved this place. But I got special treatment LOL As soon as the Tour route was published Monsieur Sémiond reserved two rooms for me and my colleague, and when I called some days or weeks before the Tour start and asked if they had any vacancy he answered: "How can you ask? Of course, I have already reserved two rooms for you." But I can assure you, he treated everybody in an incredibly friendly way, always smiling, always happy. And he looked that everybody got perfect service in the restaurant which served wonderful meals. The hotel (3 star) is an old-style hotel with antique furniture (38 rooms plus one suite). Member of the Logis de France association, it guarantees quality accommodation. Since the introduction of the Euro the rates have risen, a room now costs between 85 and 95 Euro (2007) but it has also updated the technology, like WiFi etc. As you can expect it has a special garage for bicycles ;-) Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 13, avenue Général de Gaulle, 05100 BriançonPhone: (04) 92 21 12 11Directions: On the main road, quiet rooms though.Website: http://www.hotel-vauban.fr Other Contact: vauban.hotel@wanadoo.fr
