Manoir de marmont: A wonderful experience
  • Satisfaction:
  • By SusanJRCollins on November 1, 2006
  • We stayed in Manoir de Marmont in Bourg en Bresse overnight whilst travelling to South of France. Genevieve and Henri were wonderful hosts. Genevieve is so bubbly and enthusiastic, it is very contagious. They have the most wonderful property, hidden away a little, but certainly worth persevering to find. On Genevieve's return from an antique auction she insisted we went into her kitchen so she could make us English tea in English china tea cups. After a very comfortable nights sleep we had a lovely breakfast in her conservatory/morning room. The whole property was a delight full of antiques with a very personal touch by Genevieve, we really did feel we were at home. Genevieve insisted we took some of her home made jam with us, which was delicious. We would certainly recommend anyone staying there and will be staying ourselves next year when we return to South of France.

Very quiet location, wonderful house full of antiques.

Sofitel Paris Porte de Sevres: Priceline Deal of a hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • tadjr
  • By tadjr on October 17, 2006
  • Got this hotel on Priceline. Was not sure about it since the reviews there and on another travel website were so so. We must have been lucky because we didnt have any problems at all. The hotel is a little further out than most people would probably prefer, but we had a Visite Paris pass and it was only 6 stops past the Eiffel Tower in a quieter part of town. A good deal for us. Any questions about the area or stay, feel free to ask.

Pilgrims shelter: shelter in Saint Jean Pied de Port
  • Satisfaction:
  • jorgejuansanchez
  • By jorgejuansanchez on September 30, 2006
  • Nice shelter in the middle of a medieval citadel.
You can reach Saint Jean Pied de Port from Bayonne, in France, by a lovely mini train. Some Spanish pilgrims first go to Roncesvalles and from there share the expenses of a taxi to start the pilgrimage crossing the Pyrenees.
One of the annoyances of this shelter is the tourists with their videos and photo cameras! They enter the shelter and take pictures of the pilgrims, as if they were animals in a zoological park.
Another inconvenience is that they charge money to have the Credencial del Peregrino, while in Spain is for free.

    Crown Blue Line: Self-drive houseboat
  • Satisfaction:
  • ShipCritic
  • By ShipCritic on September 27, 2006
  • Six friends spent a fabulous week exploring Southwestern France at a snail's pace on a self-drive house boat. We rented an eight-passenger "Classique" boat from Crown Blue Line and sailed on a small river in the Cognac region of France.

Very affordable and a wonderful way to explore the historic, charming towns of France. These boats are so easy to operate a 12 year old could do it. Crown Blue Line took care of all the details and we set off with fuel for a week, food for one day and a very detailed chart of the river.

Domaine de la Porte, is a charming brand new bed and breakfast that can accommodate up to 25 guests. Located in the south west of France in Les Herolles, just 1.5 hours by train from Paris, it really allows you space and quiet to relax. There are even private cottages to rent with fully equipped kitchens. This B&B offers old world charm with very clean modern ammendities. Best of all, the very friendly and warm owners are fluent in English, German, Dutch, and French so we never experienced a language barrier. I didn't want to leave!

    Their contact information is:

The food was terrific! My understanding is that instructors such as photographers, painters, computer artists, etc. are going to be offering vacation classes. I will definitely go back.

Accor hotels - Ibis in particular
  • Satisfaction:
  • By NordicTraveller on September 6, 2006
  • When travelling in Europe I am always looking for the best deals on accommodation. A few years back, around 1999, my wife and I toured Northern Europe. Upon a late arrival in Düsseldorf, Germany, in an absolute downpour, we stumbled on a recently opened Ibis hotel. It was a two-star hotel and we probably would never have considered it, had it not been for the weather. This was a very nice, clean little hotel, with no unnecessary extra frills and stuff you never use in a hotel. It was dry and we slept like babies. We where headed for France and in the lobby we took by chance a brochure of all the Ibis hotels in Europe. We had decided to camp, taken our tent with us and sleeping bags, with the accompanying amount trouble of hauling that around. We loaded up our rental car, filled the trunk with our camping gear and set of. Next stop was a camping site outside of Amsterdam. After three days of exploring Amsterdam in typical sweaty, midsummer conditions, we packed our car once more and headed for Paris. Due to our detours we where again running late and so we flipped the Ibis catalogue and found the nearest hotel. Given the price and the comfort I can tell you that our camping gear remained in the trunk for the remainder of our two week trip. Ever since, we always make use of Ibis or other Accor hotels, no frills, but just what you need.

Les échandes, Le Pertuiset, Unieux: Youth hostels along the Loire

  • The Les échandes youth hostel - France
    The Les échandes youth hostel

I cylced the Loire from its beginnings near Le Puy in the mountains of the Ardeche river to the estuary on the Atlantic coast. I stayed on camping sites mostly with some nites in Youth Hostels and a few hotels. This place was exceptionally beautiful!!

The youth hostel is actually a tiny riverside hamlet consisting of several exquisitely renovated stone cottages and one main (modern) building of matching appearance. This hamlet had been evacuated when a damm was built to create a reservoir. The flooding was not as high as expected and these little chalets were not destroyed. The FUAJ organisation bought and restored this lost village - the restoration work is truly admirable - CONGRATULATIONS FUAJ!

The location is a dream: the village lies directly on the shore of a tiny, isolated Loire peninsula directly on a lake-like loop of the river opposite the towering green wall of the Loire canyon. Access is restricted to members, the hostel is located in a nature reserve. Kayaks are available on site as well as other nature-related sports and activities.

It is a quiet place of incomparable beauty - a must for nature lovers and for someone who wants a bit of peace and quiet. The old stone and timber-framed barn has been converted into the dining hall, a kitchen is also available for self-caterers. Breakfast is one of the best I have ever encountered in France- the staff is friendly, helpful and fun. Chalets can be rented for groups or families - membership in the youth hostel association is required (membership in any association belonging to the international youth hostel association).

Nice reasonably priced accomodations -- with friendly and helpful staff. Nice sized bathrooms, and the best part is the Gare St Lazare train station is right across the street -- easy access to anywhere in Paris or the suburbs.
