We decided to spend a couple of nights just south of Paris and Melun was a good base for seeing the sights south of Paris, in the eastern part of Ile-de-France. Vaux le Vicomte is less than 10 minutes away, Blandy 15 minutes, Fountainebleau 20 minutes and Moiret-sur-Loing 35 minutes.
Ibis is a European chain of hotels that provides basic lodging at reasonable prices, there was also a location in Fontainebleau but the Ibis Melun was less expensive and had free parking. It was located right off the A5 from Paris, the hotel has an onsite restaurant, there is a McDonald's and a grocery store nearby or the center of Melun is less than a 10 minute drive.
Ibis hotels are fairly consistent in decor, comfort and amentities, if you like one, you will probably like them all. I pick them because they are always clean, reasonably comfortable, the showers always have hot water and they have free wifi. I don't really need much more than that for a 1 night stay.
